I posted this topic and I have not said anything to anyone as of yet so here goes.

First thanks to the person who helped clear up what I was saying, 'preciate that.

Second, thank all of you for responding to this, I 'preicate that as well.

Now, I see that there are various reasons why some of you dislike rap/hip-hip, that I expected. I also expected a lot of the rationale behind it as well.
1) The lack of musicianship
2)repetitive
3)overbearing and rude people who enjoy rap
4)lack of anything viable
etc, etc, etc,

This is my thing, I love music, period. I am a devout hip/hop fan, since it is one of the ways I pay the bills. But I have worked with country, rock, and christian groups as well. I listen to pop, classical, house, new age and any other genre you can name. I appreciate them all.

Rap is like rock to me. How you might ask, think of this. There are some many catagories that fall under rock. Grunge, punk, heavy metal, and the list goes on and on. Rap has it's share of sub-genres as well, hardcore gangster to pop, to alternative. The reasons why some of you dislike rap are the same reasons that I tend to not like my first love as well. That makes most of you all's points valid. The key to understanding is exposure and empathy.

I have been around the US. and a few other countries. The thing is that I can relate to things that some of you may not be able to even fathom. Not because you don't want to, but rather you have never been exposed to some of these things in there natural state (i.e. have any of you ever been in a shootout, or have any of you ever seen or help 80k or more in your hands in cash or seen 10+ pounds of any drug.) I have. That does not mean that I want to here that crap all time (50 Cent or any other hardcore? artist). But I also know that the media labels groups acts or artists wrong. No real rap fan would label P. Diddy as gangsta rap, or Outkast or some other artists that have been given that label.

It is just a matter of understanding and exploring. Instead of listening to top 40 radio or MTV cause they suck try to do some listening on your own.

Look at what artist like Green Day, and say Linken Park listen too. I think that would broaden your appreciation of not just rap, but more genres of music as well.

I do have a lot more to say, but my wife is rushing me out the door. I will holla back

infact alot of old rap is tolerable, back when it was orriginal0(well as original as it could be with the sampleing and all)... beastie boys old days, digital underground, run dmc, old public enemy, most of the stuff up to "gangsta" rap was quite tollerable...

nowadays rap seems to be a homogenized commodity
AMEN. Add select Fu-schnickens, Blackalicious, De La Soul, and Tribe Called Quest, as well as Black Eyed Peas, Digable Planets, Queen Latifah, and Mos Def to the above list.

:P The first post may have been a typo, but in actuality, I kinda' AM a rap fan who hates rap. Or at least, I hate what rap has become.

Maybe I'm showing my age is all; but rap just isn't any fun anymore. :? It used to MEAN something. In the eighties and early nineties it was about the inner city kids who couldn't afford instruments (their parents couldn't even afford separate pieces of clothing for them which explains the bagginess btw, the clothes they wore were actually hand-me-downs from older siblings; and it went on so long that it became part of the culture) making instruments of their voices and whatever they could get their hands on (i.e. their parents' turn tables), coming up with a fast, clever and soulful rhyme that, at it's best, would be the envy of any poet . . . and that would usually be made up on the spot! It was a pastime as well as an artistic endeavor; and even tho sometimes they WOULD talk about violence or drugs or sex; it wasn't in PRAISE of it like they do now; it was simply talking about what they saw in their daily lives (Groups like 'Fugees' are a CLASSIC example of this). And that was not ALL they talked about. The MAIN thrust of rap reflected their knowledge of their own culture and history, as well as PRIDE in that. They understood that their legacy was different from that of the mainstream european culture that immersed the society they lived in; so they created their own identity; and it was an overall positive one. They included as well their hopes for the future and thoughts about the world they lived in.

 I am SO freaking tired of rap now that I cringe when my sisters or brother play any; because what they play is almost GUARANTEED to be a steady, irritating drone of cursing, death threats, misogyny, blatant promiscuity, materialistic ranting, and egotistical posturing. My younger siblings have admitted to me that they don't listen to the lyrics, as long as it has a good beat they'll buy it. And maybe that's fine for their ages (there are none under eighteen); but I know several people who allow their children to listen to it, and I don't like what the music is telling them about what to look for from life. (And hell, I'm twenty-eight myself. The lack of substance is so obvious it is literally PAINFUL to listen to.)

A spoken word poet said it best: 'So don't be surprised by what your daughter knows when she's five. Just blame it on the Bullsh!t you buy'. In a society that is only just NOW truly mainstreaming viable media personalities from all different cultures and races (and both genders) it is practically cultural suicide to support 'musicians' that time and time again tell black children that 'THIS is what you are. THIS is what you should stand for. THIS is what there is to be proud of.' And yet that is exactly what I find that much of the black community (and in fact, much of the world) is doing.

It sucks. Plain and simple. XD LOL, and if you couldn't already tell, I'm pissed off about it; almost to the point where I can't talk about it rationally. *duct tapes her mouth and refrains from any further blathering*

I applaud the effort and indeed you do make an excellent point, but please don't necropost.

You joined on July 26th, so you could have replied to this a month ago when it was still fresh.

necroposting is fine if you've got something interesting to say. Necro-posting with something like "x2" isn't.

thier are generaly two main types of rap. theirs rap that you listen to for fun, like when your cruising in a car with some freinds or at a party. this is generaly mainstream/comercial rap. sure its meaningless, but its fun. and when your just chilling or trying to have a good time with some mates then its perfect. you dont want something dietailed and meaningfull. you just want something which sounds good on the surface and generaly feels cool. and while i sometimes bitch about this type of music to my freinds, i find it strangely alluring.

then theirs the other type of rap. meaningfull rap. rap which is all about the lyrics. rap which is filled with inner messages and emotion. with meaningfull rap you are allways aware of the lyrics when instening to it, even if your simply listening it for fun. take for example tupac. alot of his songs i sometimes just sit down and listen to. i close my eyes and concentrate on his lyrics. they can be painful and often distressing. the more you think about it, the beter you get an understanding of what was going through his mind as he wrote thoughs words. they're powerfull, to say the least. and the conection they bring along is one which no other type of music can replicate. because when tupac raps, he talks. he dosnt sing and try to cary along a melody or beat. his lyrics arent based around any music. they're based around what he wants to say. its not art, its too pure, its too basic. its a clear, powerfull and an uncencored form of expresion. its not cryptic in any way. their is no hidden symbolism or something which you could end up analysing and writing an essay about in an english class. his music is what he feels, not what he feels like making. (oh and, tupac isnt the only rapper with meaningfull music which i listen to. i just hold such a great deal of respect for him) .

if your one of thoughs people who, due to what little of it they've listened to, hate rap or think its all meaningless crap, then just do me a small favour and listen to mama's just a little girl by tupac ( lyrics ) . that is, in my beliefe, the most powerfull and emotionaly chalenging song ever. period.

and to answer the original question. what i hate about rap is what i hate about every other gender i listen to (mainly rock, clasical, techno/trance and certian pop, like savage garden and enrique eglasias) . theirs good rap and thiers bad rap. its more of a subconcios thing which you cant instantly pic up on until you think abot it a bit more. best get some beta testers to listen to your music before releasing anything. thats if you plan to go comercial.

I hate rap, because civilized upper-middle class suburbia, the administrators & football team of my high school, and The Republican Party of the United States told me to stop liking it. :P
