I grew up listening to rock, so its pretty lop sided choice for me. I just find that todays modern rap is horrible.... I can see how people like beats, how they the style, just today its all about them braging about how much they have and how they stepped on everyone on the way. Theres the odd exception.. key word odd. But then again thats just my opinion

Don't base a genre by what you see on tv or hear on the radio, if I was as closedminded as that I'd hate all types of music.Dookstar wrote:I grew up listening to rock, so its pretty lop sided choice for me. So I glanced through this thread...
I grew up listening to country music with occasional 1920s big band tunes or classical pieces. I heard my first rap song in 7th grade, I think, that's when "Ice Ice Baby" came out. Man that was a dumb song. My first real rock music outside of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. was probably a friend of mine who let me listen to his Nine Inch Nails CDs. Wow, that was pretty different from George Strait too. Oh, and Live. Now that was some good music. So you see, I was a bit precolored against rap music. But then I had a roommate in college who was the biggest rap fan ever, who turned me on to bands like The Roots, the Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes, etc. And although I don't go out and buy rap albums I can appreciate rap music a lot more. Now, personally, I listen to just about anything, though I prefer songs that are fun (They Might Be Giants, Man or Astro-Man?, "Weird Al" Yankovic, and Barenaked Ladies being the biggest parts of my CD collection). So if I had to choose, rap or rock, I'd just choose "fun."

As an avid listener to both rap and rock.....I can say that they both have more similarities than differences....
Each genre has artists that are by definition not really considered the definitive representative of that genre because of various reasons...
e.g.
Some people have true disdain for Linkin Park and really think that they are not really a good representative of rock music....I like em but I can see how they would not be liked by some
D4L would not be my choice to represent hiphop/rap music.....nor would the Black Eyed Peas......both groups suck in there different yet distinctive ways....
Koyashed and Megaman both have a point in saying that there are a lot of individuals who make broad statements about rap music and have a very negatively skewed view as to what it is and what it is about.
Most rap music is done from the prospective of being incredibly poor and in very hopeless situations. Rap isn't mostly about getting girls. Hell even the mainstream rap (or the what you hear on the radio) isn't mostly about getting girls and the like. Just like rock is not all about screaming and yelling and mosh pitting. The real issue is perception and experience. I can relate to artists that are a little rougher than what most of you can deal with, but that is because I lived through those experiences. If you haven't then you will not be able to understand or appreciate what is being said.
Rock and rap is generally made from breaks with the mainstream or at least going against the grain.
That is what makes both so important.
If Emenem is your only frame of reference as far is good hiphop/rap, then you my friend are truly missing out.......

I know little about rock so I dont try to act as if I do. How ever I noctice that rock fans are pretty out spoken on rap, while rap fans say nothing about other genres of music.
actually I've experience the total opposite growing up.
