Yes, I admit that Linkin Park isn't all that deep musically (that's what you mean right?)

But, that doesn't mean they're bad, just not all good, and certainly not the best out there. I like Linkin Park for the same reason i like alot of music: there's jsut something in the tune that I like, I don't know why.

That's why I can like songs ranging from Linkin Park's "Crawling", to Outkast's "Hey Ya", to Fear Factory's "Zero Signal", to Orgy's "Fiend".

Oh, and ithaqua's little nature show would be absolutely hilarious with a British guy as the narrator.

As for the 'inherent and delineated meanings of music' - no, that's not what's meant by the phrase.

Basically, that's just 'other' stuff in music; as in, paying more attention to how the band looks rather than what they play; going to the concerts to see the band members and get high fives from them rather than focusing exclusively on the music; collecting band-related merchandise just as a means for itself.

It seems to me that a lot of people are rather disconcerned with music, and much more interested in its' 'inherent and delineated meanings'. Music then becomes a commodity, like everything else.

Certainly, people who are into the whole popular culture of music will be like 'WTF, you mean I can't jump around and scream like mad while the band is playing, take pictures at concerts, and chase down the musicians for an autograph after the show?' My answer to that is: you can, but learn how not to. Learn to listen first and foremost; so then, at the right moment, when the artist wants you to focus on the music of the moment, you can do so while releasing this obsession with the 'inherent and delineated'.

In case anyone is wondering why I'm so pissed at this 'fetishizing of the inherent and delineated meanings' (which I also dub 'Devil Worship') - a certain favorite artist of mine is gradually retreating farther and farther from the audience because of this. And there isn't much further left for him to retreat

so Oto, are you saying you wouldn't like your fave artists autograph?

I hear where you are coming from, all the people who like Linkin Park because of what they look like and stuff are not their true fans. Personally I don't understand why someone would like a band because of the way they looked and acted, isn't the whole point behind liking a band is because you like their muzak?

My favourite band is Feeder, I once saw their lead singer in Stanstead airport with his girlfriend. I was obviously

I didn't ask for his autograph because he looked very confused and lost.

That depends on how I got it. If that were with the $100 8-CD set of his monologues, then yea, why not

Although I figured that a lot of the more hardcore posters from this particular board know what I'm talking about, and the others would be like 'WTF is a Fripp?'

What can I say, in 'normal' terms the guy would definitely be considered a big asshole

He just calls himself 'an unpleasant person who doesn't like people, but it's no obstacle to work'.

Frankly, I wish more musicians were 'assholes' like that

Then we'd have less to worry about music in the 21st Century...
