We were a very strange school. Lots of subculture presence, and a great place for the artists and musicians among us. They were our version of the star athletes (who were actually rather quiet and grounded people - the footbal and cheerleading captains both being good friends that I'd never have seen coming), so anyone who could hold a guitar, camcorder, or pencil made a public performance of it and an incredable competitive/cooperative creative atmosphere developed from the cultural implosion.
On a side note, when I came to school in Rochester, NY, there were three things concerning my town that folks on my floor had heard of:
The overwhelming vote for class couple was won by a pair of sweet girls who had been together for quite some time - setting of a big controversy that somehow became one of those five-second stories on the national news - causing some redneck anti-gay group to travel all the way from Kansas to protest our vote and tell us were were all going to hell. Several of us thought it'd be fun to sing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" due to the irony of their origin and what they were clogging up our parking lot for. I don't think they got it.
Some massive ecstasy bust in a club two miles from my house. Oddly enough I didn't hear about that one until a month after the fact.
Our neighbors, Portsmouth, banned "goth" music and clothing for a while after Columbine. This wasn't well recieved by the huge goth and goth-wannabe portion of the Portsmouth student body.
Who'd have thought New Hampshire could have such a colorful culture. God I miss those people.

No, just a junk band turned ethnic folk and jazz band.
But I have heard that Iced Earth, or Blind Guardian, or maybe Iced Earth and Blind Guardian put out an entire album on the Lord of the Rings a while back. Haven't had a chance to actually find the album yet, though.
