you need to stop watching MTV. :?
Well lets get together and build a time machine, since a third of those people/bands haven't had a music video premiere on MTV in the past 3 years.

Hey look, he likes 50 Cent, Good Charlotte, Cold, P.O.D and limp bizkit, what a corporate sell out, liking only currently popular people/groups and all what not.

all those bands have been big time MTV celebrities at one point or another.

And all of his new favorites are CURRENTLY very big on MTV.

If you like a genre you should explore it for yourself, you miss out on a lot of good music if you wait for it to be served to you on a silver platter.

Actually, I haven't watched MTV in a LONG time, and my current fav bands are:

Orgy (don't care what anybody says..this band kicks ass)
Linkin Park
Cold
Godsmack
Staind
System of a Down (track down their demo tracks, Blue is a good song)
UnderOath
stuff from www.ocremix.org

I understand what you mean about MTV (MTV sucks as of late), but remember, lots of the popular bands now started out small and the small time bands now may eventually become big and find their way onto MTV

Like Blink 182 and Sum 41 for example....

Also, Jace, if you want to check out some good music available nowhere else do try www.ocremix.org some of those remixers are very talented, like Jivemaster.

Good call.

And I think that applies to radio as well as MTV, because very few radio stations have the balls to play something that isn't popular. At least around here, Chicago, and Kansas City... I can't speak for other places, but I don't see why it'd be much different.

I know tons of small bands :?

and I like a lot of punk bands that are popular now, even if they are poppy. and I've been seeing Good charlotte for years, i know the band personally. I had their new record the day it came out, several months before they got popular.

Same thing with New Found Glory.

I know Blink, but I havn't been seeing them since they were small.

I've been seeing Finch and The Used since they were small. (know them both)

I've never even met A.F.I. and only seen them live twice, but I've known of their music for a long time and still like them.

I don't reject bands for being on MTV, I reject those too lazy to broaden their OWN horizons.

It's great if some one likes bands on MTV, but think of all the stuff you missed from that band, while they were small. If you'd learned about them before they got big, you'd of been able to enjoy them a lot more.

Look at The ataris for example. So Long Astoria made them Teeni Bopper famous. What is So Long Astoria? Their 6th album? These kids that waited to have The ataris forced on them missed a lot.

I liked your other post better, Jace. :? But I'm not arguing.

I think broadening your musical horizons is a necessity for music to continue. Music is diverse for a reason, and it's almost like MTV and radio are limiting that now. Both are great gateways, but you shouldn't limit yourself to what you can find there. I started on the radio, and I've had a phase with every genre I've heard of... I've finally picked the one I like best, and now I'm really digging to find the obscure bands. At first I thought they'd be horribly produced, unoriginal, talentless, lyricall inept, and thoughtless crap bands. But I was very wrong, there is a nearly infinite depth of talent I've discovered (and I know this applies to any genre, even pop where it's pretty clear that talent isn't necessary to make money) and these bands make just enough to keep putting out albums and touring.

I honestly like some of the nu-metal around, though very little, and a bunch of various punk bands. I would never buy a nu-metal album though, for a few reasons: one, it's all over the radio... two, I know some of those albums are just a few singles and a bunch of fillers... three, they make plenty of money already... and four, I spend my money on the bands that might need it. Punk bands I would spend my money on except that it would totally stand out in my limited and strictly obscure metal collection right now.

And Jace, I may only like an eighth or so of your music, but I like your tastes.

Still, it's good to explore new genres every once and awhile, especially when they overlap.

I went from metal to i-rock to industrial to electro-industrial to IDM to electronic, and then back again, and I was able to find quite a bit of this at HMV, so you don't have to look too hard for good obscure music.

P2P programs are overtaking the radio or Much/MTV for new exposure, at least among people I know (which may not mean shit all). tweaker, Wolfsheim, Klank, Autechre, Foetus, and tons of others I all listened to first off of P2P MP3's before buying the CD.
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.
