As far as Half-Life 2 - eh, I think I'm gonna wait a while til Episode 2 is out, and then they release some sort of "Gold" package which will have everything in it (HL2 + episodes, CSS, DoD, and whatever other funky extras). By then I'll have better hardware to enjoy it, too

HL is the only series of pure shooters that I was ever really enthused about. Has to be the neat storytelling.

First game excluding some stuff I can't remember from elementary school was probably Wrath of the Gods. Basically a pre-Myst adventure/puzzle game set in ancient Greece.
