The one at my college was kind of like that. A couple of them were genuinely nice guys (and do stress GUYS, because that was 95% of the group), but the rest pretty much snubbed anyone who didn't understand the random animu phrases they would spout out.

Also, I was turned off by the way they treated me as a gamer. Between the "girls aren't real gamers" stereotype BS and the fact that I don't enjoy online gaming (something that they were all into), I got treated like I knew nothing about videogames, despite the fact that I could play circles around most of them.

Combine that with the fact that I had a class that ran over half of the club meetings and I just gave up on going to them after the first half-dozen times or so. The few really nice guys actually kept talking to me whenever we would bump into each other, but for the most part, I found the group as a whole to be elitist weaboos.

What is it about most college anime groups that causes most of them to act like obnoxious children? I had the same experience at my school. Walk into the meeting and it's full of people dressed like Halloween. The guy supposedly in charge of the group was your stereotypical "ubernerd" with dragon shirt, baggy jeans, chains, and looked like he hadn't seen a barber or a hairbrush in six months. And to top it all off, the few girls in the group were flat out PSYCHOTIC. I was seriously considering that one might actually be clinically disturbed, and she gave off a really strong serial killer vibe. The other was attractive and pleasant...but wouldn't stop talking about how hot and bothered Ashitaka from Mononoke Hime made her....every...single.....meeting.....

And that's on top of the "usual" members who were so into spouting random animu phrases that I don't think they even knew how to have a normal conversation. Plus the fscking pillow-girls that were sitting there every time.

Yeah, couple meetings and I never went back...

What kind of anime clubs did you guys have?!

I confess I've only went to one anime club and most of the people were kinda normal.

My anime club is normal too. O-o

Now we do, unfortunately, have the overly obsessed fangirls/boys, but that just comes with the territory. Although the one with the DISTURBING love of Gohan just really disturbs me a little. Never read her fanfiction. >_<

I actually founded / ran the one in my high school back in 2002. It didn't ever end up being more than friends I already had and about 3 new people that joined after the first year. Never got around to starting one at my University, because the previous one was run out of town by a vindictive administrator playing copyright cop (many of the members were associated with the gaming club that has been there since the 70s and had more standing than she did to claim a room as an office). Apparently some people got together and started a club there in 2009 though. Never had reason to show up (especially since i now live 20 min away), but I hear they draw quite a few people and contribute to our numbers for AAC.

I'd be interested to hear everyone's experiences with anime clubs. My old high school anime club? Decent group people.

My college anime club? While I haven't been there in two years... well, it was flat out boring. People were so awkward.

Best memory was when we all watched Sky Crawlers. You shoulda seen some of them squirm in their seats during the quiet parts (more or less, all of it) trying to break tension here and there with an irrelevant meme outburst.

I'm not saying I'm some sort of elitist intellectual (far from it, actually) but these people.... they were not "my" people. Between that anime club, and the general con audience... it's probably where I lost any respect for "the fandom".

I haven't been to the one at my school yet, but I have classes with everyone who goes to it and runs it. I should say that I am an Animation major, which shares a LOT of classes with the Game Art and Design students.

It was like being in high school again, that feeling that everyone around you is an immature idiot, and you are the only sane one. I share their interests, I do. But it's PITIFUL. I was in a Drawing & Characterization class and we had to draw characters who were predesigned for us. One kid drew the most terrible animu drawing of a female, and was so lazy/bad that they had the hair covering her face. I understand just being bad at art, but then... why are you in a school for ART? And even more, this kid claimed he was going to move to Japan and be an animator there.

One guy in my Fundamentals of Animation class (who every day would NOT shut up about who would win a battle between kakashi and ichigo, and who talked non-stop about how bleach was the best anime ever and what the fuck have you) had, for his final project, a video of the camera zooming in and out of a traced hentai picture he did. And he was SO proud of that drawing.

I can even begin to tell you about all of the kids in my classes that talk to each other in memes, and even disrepsect the INSTRUCTORS who are not "in" with the 4chan shit, and makes complete asses out of themselves. I remember when a student was making fun of the "slutwalk" events a while back, and our instructor, who was female, told him to get off the topic or leave. He said "Oh, you mad? Cry some more". I was floored! Life drawing was the worst, as all our models were nude (as is customary). The comments they would make to those models to their FACE. I can't even begin to understand.

Then there were the kids mentioned in my earlier post. Then there's the girls who wear cat ears to school and sqee and "glomp" and carry on. And this isn't even in the club.

Don't get me wrong, there are normal anime/manga fans there, and even artists who draw in that style that are very talented. But they are a minority. Hell, the entire school's popularity is a minority compared to either the weeaboo Game Art or Animation students or the stuck up, talentless fashion design students.

This is why I switched to Illustration! \o/ Much better crowd of people here. Even the students who are in to anime and manga. It's a breath of fresh air.

Long story short: I will never be attending the Anime/Game club at my school.

Especially the figure drawing class parts. I'm cringing at the thought of what my figure drawing prof would have done if anyone said that kind of thing to the model. Apparently one of our models had been harassed (not about animu/mango things, but just some dumb "why you show your cock to strangers" comment) and my prof got the kid who said them kicked out of the program.

I always drew animu stuff, but it was always for me really, I never used it in class because I knew I didn't know shit about art and I'd rather learn what real art is. Thank god for figure drawing. Learning to draw people how they are supposed to look and from observation is awesome. I still suck at the head/face, but I got so much better through those classes.

I would go off on a huge rant about narcissism in our society and especially in media and arts, but I'm saving that for when I buy some mic gear so I can RECORD it and probably post it here on the .org.

Sorry you left the animation department, but glad you're enjoying illustration! :D

I normally don't like beans, but I can eat them without problems.

I decided out of the blue to get a bean burrito for lunch today and now I feel like there's a razor blade in my stomach.   :x :x :x :dino:
