Personally I like just about all music you can think of - as in genre, not just any band. Some are just crap...I'll listen to it, and if it sounds good to my ears. I like it. In other words...I'll listen to Rap even though I don't normally like it. There CAN be some good Rap songs out there. I try to keep an open mind and not disregard it before I listen just because of stereotypes. But that's just me of course.

What does it mean?nailz1000 wrote:First of all, They have worse english skills than Tuatha De Danann. Secondly, what does that even MEAN? I dip myself in sauce because I'm comparable to a chicken nugget? I mean, seriously, WTF?
The "We chicken nugget, we dip in the sauce like mop and bucket" is rough line which suggests that they consider themselves from the 'backward' parts in the deep south. ie- through the stereotype that working class people from the deep south region of the US use more sauce on the food that they eat. Also, using the food of "chicken nugget" is strengthens this implication (for example, the lyric wouldn't work with "lamb stroganoff"). The use of introducing the "blue collar critics" as a contrast in the next line further signifies the mearning. If you failed to comprehend even the words which introduced the text, I can see why you didn't like any of the rest of the song, let alone the more 'meaningful' sides of rap. It's complex, it requires thought. You will not get it spoon fed to you.
As for their Outkast's English skills, I personally believe their use of metaphor and rhyhme through some of their songs is extremely strong. Of course your criticisms are because their songs lack traditional grammar - but this is why I originally suggested mp3 files. A lot of the grammar comes through emphasis and rhyme - which do not translate well to written form. You'd probably have understood the meaning behind the words if you could hear them vocally.
Or whatever. Maybe hip hop is just guns & alchohol.

what do you mean by variety?flint_the_dwarf wrote:Nah, I definitely agree with that. And I think Nailz does too, because he listens to all this weird funny shit. I think his main problem is that there isn't much variety in most rap lyrics. I don't listen to rap, so I don't know if he's right or not... but I've got a good feeling that he is. It seems like most of it is pretty typical.

There's plenty of hip-hop out there that's thought provoking and analytical. How about we take a look at these from Mr. Lif, conveying a political message:
Can't say I necessarily agree with him, but I think they are good lyrics. Now let's talk about self expression, true expression
Open your minds without question
No doubt, tell me what you're thinking about
Let's try to set aside pride and clout
Can you believe I feel the same exact way you do?
You truly do believe these modern ways have fooled you
Systems exist so we never meet each other
Pretty soon from now that I'll long the word 'brother'
And that's true if they see you walking with a crew
If you don't know, that means more than two
I'll tell you what they'll do
They'll pull over, hunt you over
Kick your ass, nightstick to your shoulder
I know it's unjust, as if it wasn't enough
If you try to fight back they're locking your ass up
And Chuck already told you that a cell is hell
But I'm waiting for the phone so I'll sit for a spell
Call the guard, tell him I'm a piece of God
With no beliefs in his streets or his boulevards
I eat, read so my mental is hard
And the heat from my anger just melted the bars
They reach for their guns so I put them to sleep
Break the chains and put the shoes back on my feet
He's on the loose with no discernible scars or marks
Just the mind of Mandela and the heart of Rosa Parks
So I dip, time to see the governor and mayor
Tell them life ain't fair and see if they care
Well they do, but only if they are the heir
So they appear to have a heart and make a flair
But they haven't done shit for us and that's a fact
Their only function is to keep the funny money where it's at
And it causes pain, stress
Ask me if we need a different way of life (yes)
Headline: Bush steals the presidency
He needs the backing of the media what could the remedy be?
The country's headed for recession reminiscent of the Great
Depression
Are lives worth a world of power? Easy question
Planes hit the towers and the Pentagon
Killing those the government wasn't dependant on
It's easy to control the scared so they keep us in fear
With their favorite Middle Eastern demon named Bin Laden this year
Bush disguises blood lust as patriotism
Convincing the living to love 'Operation Let's Get 'Em'
But when he realized we don't support their attacks
They needed something to distract, hmm, anthrax
This further demonizes Afghanis
So Americans cheer while we kill their innocent families
And what better place to start a war
To build a pipeline to get the oil that they had wanted before
America supported the Taliban
To get Russia out of Afghanistan
That's how they got the arms in
They're in a war against the Northern Alliance
And we can't build a pipeline in hostile environments
Here's what your history books won't show:
You're a dead man for fuckin' with American dough
They killed several birds with one stone
While you're at home with anti-terrorism up in your dome
But my eyes are wide open and my TV is off
Great, 'cause I save on my electricity cost
And you can wave that piece of shit flag if you dare
But they killed us because we've been killing them for years
T.O. rules me.

No, it doesn't have to be meaningful. Listen to Tuatha De Danann's "The Dwarves Rebellion", or "Finganforn" and you'll instantly see why I love them. They're rediculious. However, they're .. as flint said.. funny. "I'm a chicken nugget dipped in sause of a mop and bucket" ... Thats just stupid, I guess. If I wanted deep analytical lyrics, I'd turn to Manson. Jesus Christ.. at least he doesn't elude to food and janatorial work to convey messages. I'm sorry, I couldn't ever refer to myself as 'chicken nugget'. or .. "Snow Shovlet".. or whatever you might call someone who lives in Buffalo.fyrtenheimer wrote:do all lyrics have to be meaningful? music is music and it can be fun. it doesn't have to be a singer pouring their heart out.

mmm.... well, ridiculous and deeply analytical don't have to be mutually exclusive, but they are a rare combination.
That combo is actually why I love Captain Beefheart, though I guess it's only fair that a lot of people with more 'normal' music tastes can't stand him...

Well, preference will always be a subject no one can realistically defend with facts. So it's kind of pointless to go on about it. It's all just opinion. Some like it, some don't. Hopefully they have at least some reasons for it...but they don't need to.

I said that before though. Well, I've been saying it here for months now
Although I'm of that opinion for a lot more than just preference... but that's another story. You know, subjectivity of perceptions of reality, etc
