It shows declared locations of guestbook signers, and gives a poor approximation of how many people knew Patrick. I say "poor" because a really useful sampling would likely have points all over the globe.

Sometimes it's useful to see even limited datasets, though.

I'm on there under my Texas address (I checked). I don't recall, but was the guestbook not able to handle foreign addresses?

There were two addresses in Canada, so the guestbook probably does support non-US addresses.
