Screeching singers.

Post by Kelli » Mon May 31, 2004 11:54 pm

Is anyone else bothered by singers who literally scream out the lyrics to the point where the words they're singing are indiscernible? There are some amazing bands out there with absolutely stunning lyrics and beautiful music. So much potential, but the so called "singing" ruins it. Seriously, where's the talent in screaming your throat raw?

From Autumn To Ashes - 'Short Stories with Tragic Endings' comes to mind. The screeching singer ruins the song for me so I can only stand to listen to the latter half of the song when the female singer starts in normally. It's a shame because the music is beautiful and there are some amazing lyrics there.

Recently, I downloaded an awesome Bebop video (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=24216) featuring the band, Dead Poetic's 'A Green Desire'. Another case of pretty lyrics being screeched out. I've grown attached to the song somehow (it's not neary as bad as FATA's 'Short Stories with Tragic Endings'). Plus the screeching is more balanced out by some real singing which is a plus.

Still, why can't these songs be sung instead of screamed out?

It's an artist's decision. I guess they felt it was appropriate...

Frankly, for me it's not screaming or singing that counts. It's how well one does it. Some of the best songs I've heard were screamed out, and I didn't mind because of how strong they were musically.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I happily acknowledge that and feel that Dead Poetic does a pretty great job with incorporating both. Some just fall short of pulling it off, imo. The first half of FATA's 'Short Stories with Tragic Endings' borders on schizophrenic in pace and pitch. It makes the latter half seem like a different song entirely. It's excessive and just fails to come together for me. :/ However, I'm sure there are other people out there who enjoy it.

Thanks a lot for your input. ^^

You mean like Rob Halford of Judas Priest? That's what makes it HEAVY Metal! 8)

Well I don't like the screaming type of music, I rather like music with great melodies suchs like Nightwish or Lacuna Coil. Those groups are Gothicgroups and they are so darn good that you just have to hear them.

Don't mind the screeching. If a band is trying too hard to sound "hardcore", then it just ends up a pretentious mess.
... and that's the story of how you were born

yep i cant understand that either... i think that there should be a balance in a song between screams and singing...but that depends on the genre of music the artist belongs let say for instance hardcore or screamo bands like from autumn to ashes , poison the well, etc... in most of their songs they scream on the entire song in my opinion i find that quite annoying.

Hey about that song u heard from dead poetic that was from their first album ... u should listen to new medicines their new album its awsome... the singer now actually sings most of the songs and thats good cause he has an incredible voice . U should check it out
