You pretty much just shot yourself in the foot just saying that....

First off if you're a Rap Fan... You wouldn't hate or dislike rap at all.

Now If even Rap fans hated Rap, that would be a funny concept, and also probably justify the rants all over this board saying how Rappers are a bunch of dumbasses.

Now if you meant to ask why rock fans hate rap you'll get a variety of answers like..

1) it takes no talent to talk over a beat machine
2) they don't mention anything important
3) (insert Racist comment here)
4) Its just not my bowl of rice
5) Mommy said Rap is from the devil
6) Rap doesn't go with anime
7) and very very few meaningful answers. to your question

Now All I have to say Is... you like what you like, and as long as you don't go around pissing in your neighbors yard about it its all good to me.

hahn? I'm not sure I follow you, but if you're on about the occasional rap-bashing that occurs on these boards, I think I can help you out.

You're not going to get an intelligent answer from anyone who genuinely "hates or dislikes rap so vehemently", because they don't have any reasons beyond "it sucks", without any sort of justification. There are precious few of those here, they win no arguments, and they generally get ignored.

A lot of the time what you may interpret as hatred for rap , reading through the archives here, is much more hate of a specific rap fan. son_goten is usually (~90% of the time) a complete asshat, and people will feign or exaggerate their dislike of rap just to piss him off and make him spaz out in barely formed English.

The rest should best be interpreted as hatred for commercial rap, which is all that most people are ever exposed to, courtesy of the 80/20 rule. If your definition of 'rap' or 'hip-hop' was solely informed by the inane crap that is built and engineered for Top 40, you'd probably hate it too. It's not that commercial success and artistic merit are diametrically opposed, but given the simple fact that the most basic or formula 20% of anything will suffice for the first 80% of the population, record execs see little incentive to market genius when they can more cheaply produce eminently marketable crap.

I don't personally find even underground rap to my taste, but I can concede that it has as much value and relevance to its fans as my scene does to me, and that those people who do like it probably feel the same measure of disdain towards the people the industry has selected to represent them at the top of the charts that I do towards bands such as the ones Metallica took out on tour last summer, who the media do the enormous service of calling them metal instead of CRAP.

There is a lot of CRAP out there. And because most of the population "listens to music" rather than LISTENING to MUSIC, it tends to predominate commercially, across genres and styles. Blame rap's current commercial popularity for pushing the crap into our ears, rather than us for calling it what it is. Intelligent people will at least acknowledge musical quality, regardless of whether they personally like it or not. It's your job, like mine, to raise the profile of the quality output of our scenes so that those who our styles don't appeal to won't continue to just write off the genre entirely. If you could post some info on who you've worked with, or some samples if it's just your own stuff so far, that'd be a good place to start for here.

hth &regards,

I don't really dislike it, let alone hate it in general.

I'm annoyed when my neighbour's car stops in front of the window with his damn subwoofer on and continues polluting my environment with senseless, inconsiderate booming and woofing for a good hour; I'm annoyed to have rap fans (I won't mention any names) come in and incompetently and inconsiderately proclaiming rap 'the best' and the rest 'the worst'; and I would be annoyed if I had to live with rap on a daily basis. I'll admit, it's not my kind of music.

But the fact I don't enjoy it with any regularity doesn't mean I'll deny liking a number of good rap tracks on occasion, or have any contempt for the style in general.

Why I'm not a rap fan is a very simple thing - it's not my kind of music, the images and ideas associated with the rap culture are not my kind of images and ideas, and I've simply discovered what I'm looking for in music already, and rap doesn't tend to be where that lies.

That said, again, don't think I wouldn't enjoy a good rap on occasion.

oh and Oto. As much as I know how much that Woofer stuff can be annoying to other people. I'm one of those people who will go around playing Hanson in the worst street I can find and then play thug rap in the most stuck up of neighborhoods every now and then... Just for a goof. :)

Hehe, no, I have the tendency to do some odd crap also, don't worry. It IS annoying, especially on a day to day basis, but I'm not against the occasional kind of thing like that per se.

Besides... our recent strategy to counter our neighbours has been my brother bringing the volume on his speakers at the window to full and playing the following quote from 'Boondock Saints' to the folks gathered outside - "Why don't you make like a tree... AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!", full blast

And if it gets really annoying, I do have those large speakers and the largest collection of King Crimson and Captain Beefheart in town, and I can ascertain that, to a normal ear, that is above and beyond any irritation that the regular beat of rap can bring

I don't like rap because I DO like metal. It's like being a white girl who's dating a black man back in the 40's.
