Gothic metal

Post by inuhikarifan » Sat Aug 27, 2005 4:02 pm

Anybody know a good gothic metal band that's similar to Within Temptation? Something without a lot of death grunts, I can't stand it when they overuse those, it should just be there every so often for effect. Thanks in advance. :D

ok then... listen ^^

After Forever: they are NO death-growls, and they sounds like the older Within Temptation songs, and they are from the netherlands.

Xandria: they have also a female singer, and play also slower songs.

Alas: are from sweden, and it a sideproject from a therion-member (i don't know who) sometimes they use also doublebases

Visions of Atlantis: the austrian answer to nightwish

Lacrimas Profundere: my actually favourite gothic-metal-band, very depressiv with a male singer

Midnattsol: the new band with the sister fom Liv Kristine, with a little folk-influence...

i could enumerate much other bands, but the others could also whrite something ^^

Agalloch, Flowing Tears, and Novembre are all pretty good. Most others I like use more growls.

I'll add you should try giving EPICA a listen. They do incorporate a little bit of those annoying grunts but not by much. They're actually pretty good. They only have two albums so far (I recommend the second one, Consign to Oblivion, as it's a little better then their debut). Plus, Kamelot's Roy Khan sings duet with singer Simone Simons since she sang on Kamelot's new album, The Black Halo.

Theatre of Tragedy. They dont use growling voices much, but they put it to damn good use when they do.

Hopefully, our definitions of goth metal don't differ too much. :P I was actually thinking Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, Limbonic Art, Old Man's Child, Saturnus, Trail of Tears, and Gehenna (Malice and Seen Through the Veils of Darkness). But it's a grey area with most of them, bordering on black/goth/doom. I guess once you start adding some more growls to goth, it becomes black metal.
