Rap vs. Rock

I was reading threw the forums and I was just thinking how today most people only listen to 2 general genres "MAIN mainstream type music"

Rap and modern rock... I personally dont like either strongly but thats all you ever hear. Anyways I was wondering what you guys perfer?

Modern Rock vs. Rap

*modern rock being: Adema, Soil, Chevelle, Linkin Park(not so much here), Hedley and all those random musicians.... Non modern rock is like Queen, Motley Crew, i think yuo guys catch my drift.

Anyways I prefer Modern rock over rap.. Rap scares me with its maming women and killing people 0_o... That and I like guitar *being a guitarist myself* and other intruments. Rap is just almost monotoes speaking to a beat... thats just my 2 cents though

i like music more depending on the song, than the genre or artist...

though i do tend to gravitate towards more rock music I've been known to like hip-hop or rap at times...

I'm kind of ashamed of that definition, but ok...

For me personally, rap falls under poetry more than music. That's not to take away from it, but the musical dimension of it does tend to be rather thin. Hip-hop is another question, of course.

Rock? I think the fact that rock is a genre is a sort of illusion. You can lump everything in like you did, but then realize that a person who listens to death metal on the one hand, and a person who listens to Good Charlotte really have little in common with each other - except the fact that their music in both cases originated in rock.

In other words, that's a terrible way to generalize it all

same here. I like almost all types of music. Rock, rap, dance, techno even some pop. I honestly think that amvs are a rock dominated field. We could use more rap/techno amvs because now theres too many rock amvs and i feel like i'v seen all there is to see. for the love of the 'devine amv'! arise my minions and change it up! ....but no scooter! >_<

pretty much same here. I like songs from every genre. Just so happens that probably the most songs I;ve liked in the past happened to be in the Rock category. but I like songs from Rap, Hip hop, R&B, Jazz, alternative, techno, Dance, Pop (including J-pop), orchestral music, classical music and even country. Theres bound to even be categories I've liked songs from that I'm forgetting to mention.

I like both, but I don't consider rap to be actual music. To me its just electronic beats with someone talking funny. That dosen't change the fact that i like to listen to it. Rock on the other hand I like because of musicianship.

Uhh... modern rock? Going by what you used as examples, I don't like it all that much. I don't really like rap either, but I have more respect for it. As with Otohiko, I consider most rap to be more poetry than music anyway.

I'll stay with my comparatively obscure metal.

No doubt about it there are alot of different types of genres of music.. I was just generalizing 2 major ones.. The ones I hear about all the time thats all.

Dont worry so am i... Those were just random bands that came off the top of my head. I personally listen to ska/punk music more often then none... But all i ever here on the radio is rap or rock*of any kind really* I just tried to simplify the question tahts all ...

I'd guess that most people here are in their teens to mid twenties. Sure there are plenty of exceptions but lets not forget that there are over 500,000 members, most don't participate in the forums here. Most likely this group pretty much defines mainstream. IE: the averages begin to play out when you get enough people in one place.

Personally I listen to country music, rock, classic rock and metal. Movie soundtracks and whatnot round out my collection.

Right now in my cd player I have E-nomine, Shania Twain and Juno Reactor. That's a pretty broad spectrum. Actually just take a look at the profiles of the people that have responded to this thread thus far and you'll see a pretty wide mix of stuff, so if that's a typical example, where are you getting your mainstream overload?
