Okay, a general question that may lead to more questions...
Can you only use an image with "sharp" edges for the matte? For example, if I wanted to use a heart, could I only use a heart shape that had a very definitive outline as opposed to one that was fuzzed-out or blurred?

Matte feathering is what you're looking for.
