I think you are more looking for a tutorial. Hope someone can help you.
Btw, asking for paid programs is prohibited on these forums, so don't do it, please. Anyone is free to link you to a freeware software, though.

Which program should i be using?
Welcome Magic Edit User.
.. The editor you speak of is a dual-line Shareware product.
That one is actually one of the better designs.
.. To improve your skills on Video Editing does not require
much these days: Masking, Filtering, Adding Your Own Animations
and a little Photobie clean-up is almost everything you need.
1) to upload to this site, you'll need an FTP program.
2) Any Video Editor will do.
3) some kind of Graphics program will be needed.
.. now to the question you forgot to ask:
Programs like After Effects and/or Auto CAD/Blender are quite good
at making your own animations and sometimes they even fill-in area's
where a missing Video Frame might be needed but, do you need it?
.. Editing video's has nothing to do with "getting fancy" on someones TV Series;
after all, they are the ones who produced it. When you believe that you
can make a better TV Series than you are currently editing, then the answer is "YES"
-- find your tutorials on this and almost any subject at YouTube. --

Adobe Premiere in combination with Adobe After Effects is a very popular combination. You can find a free trial for it can be found here. Just make sure you have a 64bit operating system. If you are still on a 32bit system for what ever reason. You'll have to look for a trial of Production Premium or the separate pieces of software [Premiere,After Effects etc] from CS3/CS4.
An other popular choice and a bit more affordable would be Vegas Pro. A trial of the latest version can be found here.
Those are the programs most people use to create AMV's. I'm sure that if you dive into either of the two options you'll find a lot of new creative opportunities. If you still find things lacking you can always return here and ask for specific guidance.
