why begging for your video?

Post by appie1985 » Tue Jan 06, 2004 5:39 am

Isn't it weird to aks ppl to give an opinion to your video? Isn't it better just to download a random video and give an opinion on it, instead of begging others to see your video.

What's the real purpose of this section?

Opinions are money - you have to buy your way onto the top lists with opinions and unless people really like you (or know you exist and therefore watch your vids) free opinions are hard to come by. The exceptions are videos everyone has heard of - the ones that spread by word of mouth, cons, and friends recommending vids to friends. Those tend to get lots of opinions just by being good. Other videos, by unknown creators, have to struggle to get people to even watch them. And then, the chances of one of those people leaving a review is still slim - even the ones who loved it may not take the time to drop a small bit of feedback telling the creator as much.

As for this section, it's helpful for new creators who need feedback in order to know where to improve in their editing. It's useful for non-new creators who want to know what different people might think of their video (with an exchange, you *force* people to watch and comment on your vid - it isn't just reviews from those who chose to download it on their own).

Now, forcing people to review a video in an exchange is a double-edged sword. You won't get the happy praise you'd get from those who downloaded and reviewed the vid because they liked it, and you run the risk that if you don't give good scores in exchange the person will bomb your vid. But it's still the only guaranteed way to get feedback on something, and with the minimum for the top list being 8 reviews, it can be the only way for some videos to make it up there - and we all know the top list is the first place new members are directed when they ask where the good vids are, so that's the place people want to be.

You don't have to beg here - that's the main point. This isn't the place to beg, it's in the forum description - 'no begging'. What this place is for is exchange. You give a review and you get a review. Yes, I think it's very nice to download random vids and leave reviews, I did that for a few months before I ever used this forum. But don't think that will get you reviews in return. I reviewed over 150 people (people - not 150 vids, vids by 150 creators) before any of them reviewed one of my vids. The only ones who cared to return the favor were the 15 or so people for whom I reviewed everything listed in their profiles (sometimes over 20 vids). Obviously reviews are not cheap or easy to come by. And even if you think it's right to return a favor by reviewing those who review you, don't expect other people to play that way. They may not have the time, or the will to do so.

If you want feedback, but don't want to exchange on this forum, then just pick up one of the free op threads. Those are the ones like you said - the ones who like to get random vids and leave feedback. But *this* way, they can be sure the vids they review were made by people who *want* feedback to begin with. I don't know about everyone else, but I've written a lot of reviews that weren't welcome (not flames, just indepth reviews) - that's when I stopped grabbing random vids and decided to only review vids where the creator asks me to - hence the free ops. It's safer and you can be sure the person willl appreciate the review since he did ask for it in the first place.

Better than reviewing random vids and having the creators either ignore you or ask why you reviewed the vid if you didn't think it was perfect. :?
