Opinions and Reviews
Greetings to all AMV creators and viewers, allow me to be the first to introduce this new subject and first post. I will first introduce myself and I will tell my intentions of this posting.
My signature will repeat this but I'll state my name for the record, I am Johan Rodriguez of Star Studios. My videos have included such titles as "Bad Touch" which won the Audience Choice Award at the Anime Oasis 2004 as well as "Hey Haruka" which had won the "Judges Choice Award" at the Anime Oasis 2003. Now that I've given and listed my credits I'll get to the point.
As most of us know here at Anime Music Videos.org, there's the ability to review and give opinions here at the site, to tell what a creator has done right as well as wrong. Though it seems that there has been lack of reviews, as one banner put's it "No opinions?" asks one character, "I'm a little busy" says the other. Though some may say that I'm somewhat selfish for bringing this up, but I am quite sure that I'm not the only one who feels a little bit neglected about not getting any opinions about my own work.
Thinking about that as well as other AMV creators who have the same problem I decided to do something about it. From this point onward I will make it my personal habit or rather mission that with every single music video that I download and view, I shall make a review for it.
I know that it may not seem like much, which is the reason I started this posting, to get my idea out ot others, becuase if I do this and tell others, then hopefully others will do the same. Then we will all have that benifit of both giving and recieving opinions from AMV creators and viewers, because I'm sure we all want feedback as well as some praise from others knowing that our work wasn't a complete waste. Am I right?
And so I am off, to make opinions of the videos that I had downloaded and watched. Do you think you'll do the same for the videos you have seen and will see? Only time and the opinion numbers will tell.

it would be a wonderful online world if we all had the free time to post useful opinions about every video we viewed. I used to try to leave ops on every video, but I found I could not always be very helpful, and what good is an op if you don't learn anything from it?
it's natural that most people will leave ops for the videos they like the best, but I even had to stop that, being that some of my favorite videos had ops in the triple digits, and there was no way the creator had enough time to read them all. now I try to leave ops for videos that are really lacking in ops, as long as I feel I can say something worthwhile.
using this forum, though, and going op exchanges is a pretty solid way to get some ops. still, it doesn't compare to the feeling of getting an op for your video when you didn't have to go asking for it. I wish I could say there was some pattern for what videos get ops and what videos don't, but I have yet to see it. lol.
for most of us, this is a hobby, and as much as we want to download 100s of videos and leave detailed ops about each one, the time just isn't there. I have at least 3 videos in my op folder that have been there for at least a week or so now, waiting for me to give them my full attention and leave an op. but I feel the effort that goes into a good op is something that takes time and concentration. in other words, I'll get around to it eventually, even if it takes me a month. lol.

My reply to Norskotaku,
I do agree with you on serveral points that it would seem to defeat the purpose of constructive criticism if no one learns anything from it. And it is very true that not all of us can make great videos like William Millberry of the Aluminium Studios, who does have opinions in the triple digits on several of his works.
Still, I feel that regaurdless of the number of opinions every one counts, these things do build upon one another, I still think that from the lowest quality to the highest quality, every video should at least have some opinions, suggestions, and helpful hints from other creators such as ourselves.
Another point I do agree with you upon is that yes, this forum is a good way for all of us to get opinions. And that it doesn't quite fill the gap when you get opinions when you didn't ask for them. Still, any opinion is better than none at all.
As far as the issue of time, yes, for some it would be a huge problem, but I'm thinking that we should all make it a common curtousey to leave these opinions like saying "thank you" when recieving a gift. But you are right that a good opinion does take a good deal of effort, but when doing that imagine this.
Imagine the reaction that the creator will get when they see an opinion that someone took the time and effort to put into it. And now imagine that in reverse when you yourself recieve an opinion. Isn't that worth doing this one thing for another video creator?

Very true. I myself try to leave opinions on any recently created video I downloaded that I can see effort went into it. If time permits, I will say as much as I can think of to say to be both helpfull and encouraging. If I don't have the time, I will still Tell the creator if I enjoyed the AMV. However, I do beleive somewhat in the philosiphy that "If you don't have anything good to say, don;t say anything at all" so If their amv is so terrible that I couldn't find anything at all good about it, I won't opinion it unless I am asked for it.
On the other hand, I also think that some people feel it is a waste of time to write meaningfull opinions on some videos, especially when there are so many on there that you wonder if the creator will even see it. Also if the creator doesn't reply to them It also makes you wonder if they even took the time to read all that you wrote. Especially when some of my nitpick reviews can take more than an hour to do. So there are problems on both ends. I find that a good bit of creators, especially the better ones, Often times do not reply to ANY of the comments they receive, which leads one to wonder if they just have a big head, or if they just don't have the time to read them all, or if they don't even bother to check them anymore. So then one tends to beleive it would be a waste to write a review for this person, as it is unlikely he/she would even care. This is the reason I make it a rule to reply to every single feedback I get regardless to how big or small it is, even if its just a small note saying "Thanks for the opinion! It was helpfull." In any rate, I still leave opinions, Since I just think about how I feel when I get an opinion, especially one that I didn't ask for. The creator still put alot of effort and time into their video, So, even if they do not reply, I like to think that they did see it and it made them happy to receive it .
Anyway, didn't mean to turn this into a rant or anything, But you have a good thing going, and I am one that will also support you in your efforts.

I try to leave opinions in three primary cases - if a video really impressed me, if I really have something valuable and constructive to say about it, or when I promised to do so.
The first two are obviously a bit more fun to do. But if you're planning to op everything like that - hey, great! I think we could all use more viewers like that.

As regards to feedback, which Bakadeshi here mentioned - yea, it's nice to see when a creator took note of it, and I try to do that for my ops too. Of course, there's a reverse end to that - often, writing a response is almost as much of an effort as writing an op. (which reminds me about responding to your op, eventually )
Anyways, I can certainly say that there's never such a thing as too many ops. Just as long as they're distributed as tokens of well-meaning attention...

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Re: Opinions and Reviews
yeah, good point. it's another one of those 'do unto others' cases, cause we all know first hand how great it feels to get an op, especially when you're new here. those first few ops I received may have been few and far between, but I checked my profile every day hoping to see one so I could find out what people thought of my work. I should do better to keep that feeling in mind when watching other creators' amvs, and know that most of them probably enjoy getting ops just as much as I do.Johan Peacecraft Rodrigue wrote:Imagine the reaction that the creator will get when they see an opinion that someone took the time and effort to put into it. and to Bakadeshi, yeah, I'm with you on the notion of replies. I often check all the opinions I've left to see if anyone has replied. sometimes I'm curious to know if my review was helpful, or perhaps there was something I misunderstood about the amv and they corrected me, or just to know that they read it. I didn't make a habit of this always, but any ops I receive now I take a minute to reply to. there is usually something in the op I want to say thanks for, or confirm that their input was useful.
