Handbrake is good for DVD backups. If you just want to rip the DVD use MacTheRipper to get footage. However, you will have to use another program like MPEG StreamClip to convert your ripped DVD into a DV format. iMovie like to work with HDV or DV. There is an outdated iMovie guide, and you can look at that for some help.
