Editing on a Mac?

Hey guys,

Somebody asked me to help him with his first amv and I'm glad if I can help. I know the person in real life and that's why it's great to be able to come along and just show all the necessary things about amving and the technique behind it.
However the person uses a Mac and well I always edited on my Windows machines. That's where I need help from you =D

I would need some Mac - equivivalent things for the following stuff and I also have some general questions about editing on a Mac.

What are my looseless codecs of choice for editing on a Mac?

Avisynth 3 isn't already out as far as I know, that's why I need something that can convert and filter/clean WMV9 .mkv video footage to editable videos. We can do this step on my laptop, but I would need a solution so the person can work independently.

What are my programms of choice to compress the final product?

Are there any other stuff that I need to take care of or things that are easier on a Mac?


We'll use Adobe products for editing and effects.

Depends on if you plan on editing HD video or standard def video.

If I'm editing standard def, I routinely use the "Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2" CODEC.

For HD, I've never edited in a lossless CODEC. I have recently used the "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)" CODEC which looks great.

As far as compressing for final output, I prefer Compressor.
For web distribution, I prefer the H264 CODEC which is awesome.

If you need to convert WMV files on the mac, you can get a copy of Flip For Mac, which is a quicktime plugin for reading and converting WMV's to different formats. The WMV reader is free to download, but to convert WMV's to another format to edit with, you need the WMV Player Pro for $29
Once the plug in is installed, you can use any Quicktime application to read and transcode WMV's
