.VOB files...converting to editable Final Cut Pro format

Post by JonnyPhoenyx » Wed Apr 14, 2010 3:57 pm

Hi guys,
I've done a rough search of the forums and didn't see a straight forward answer to this:
I use a Mac, so Final Cut Pro is my choice software. Now, FCP does NOT like H.264 files (unlike some other editors), so I'm looking for the best quality codec that FCP can work with. I have all the .VOB files I've ripped from my Gurren Lagann DVD collection and was going to run them through MPEGStreamClip (b/c that gives me the most options) to get a full-res, editable video file.
My question:
If I have a .VOB file, what is the highest resolution and highest quality codec I can convert it to that will be FCP friendly? I know not many AMV editors don't use Macs, and FCP even fewer.I want to stick to these programs, so please don't suggest crossover or windows programs in place of the ones I have. I just want to know a codec and resolution from a dvd-ripped .vob file.

Thanks
-JP

According to Kionon's guide, huffyuv is usable on MACs too, so I'm gonna suggest that.

Mirko is correct. I would recommend HUFFYUV.

Others have had success with DV, but it's a lossy format, so you need to watch the compression with it. The one benefit to DV is that you do not need to render to preview in FCP with DV.

I just wanted to mention thath Final Cut Pro can directly work with .vob files. However I recommend you to stick to Kionon's guide. FCP's abilities to deinterlace and clean up footage are fairly limited.
