collections in vegas?

Post by shinigamidesu » Sun Jul 26, 2009 10:40 pm

I'm really liking vegas, however there's one feature in WMM that I love that helps me out a lot, that I'm not sure is able to be duplicated in vegas.

I make fan videos from the korean boys over flowers, which are 1 hour 25 episiodes long.

so I have A LOT of footage to go through and I usually make videos out of two separate couples, whose clips span the entire series.

It's easy because in WMM i can find the clips and 'save' them in a collections so I can go back and keep making videos from the clips.

can i do something like that in vegas?

Well normally how people do it (and how you'll need to eventually because of the format your videos are undoubtedly in)((Read the stickies)) is they make their clips with the whole Vdubmod process. I keep my clips in a folder like DVDs>Series>Converted. This way I can easily load them into the media pool each time.

You may also be talking about the trimmer. Instead of putting the whole episode on the timeline you can Right click each clip and select trimmer and Select bits from there.

Yes, you can do that, or at least something very similar (if I understand correctly).

In the "project media" tab it should say 2 things: "All Media" and "Media Bins" which looks like a folder. Right click on "Media Bins" and choose "create new bin". That will create a new folder where you can keep a collection of clips. Create however many bins you need and use right click to rename them. Then go onto your timeline and cut your footage or wtv until you have the clips that you want to save. Make sure that you are in the right media bin where you want to save them. Then right click on the clip and select "create subclip". It will save your clip in that folder so you can go back and find it.

Also, one thing that might be different though is that your media bins will only be saved in the project where you create them. So you can't access them if you start a new project. However you can get around this a couple ways.
One is just clearing your timeline and saving the project with a new name so it has all the same media.
Another is if you've already started another project and you decide that you want access to one of your media bins it can be done but it's kind of a pain. I dunno if you'll think it's worth doing but I'll explain it if you want.
I think the ways I use Vegas are pretty strange sometimes but I just find wtv works for me. Hope it helps.

Ahh I do miss the collections from WMM, but then again the solution that was given here seemed simple enough and something that I used to do in WMM anyway. I'll try adding clips from the time line into the media bin and see if that works.

Nope didn't work, there was no Create subclip, though I am using SVMS 9 Platinum and not a solid professional version of Vegas so that might be why... Either way I decided that since I don't want to lose my clips, I'll just save my current project under a new name and start editing it from there, and I will go in and re-name the old project with the cut, but unaltered clips, "ORIGIN TEMPLATE" so I know that when I want to go in and make a new Origin AMV (And I know there will be more, I love that movie...) I can open that, and save it as a new project file, still have all my clips cut up and ready to go, and not lose the template file, or the cut up clips. When you write it out it sounds like a lot of work, but honestly it only takes a few milliseconds to create a new project and rename your file...

Seriously? That surprises me. It doesn't seem like any type of advanced feature that they would skimp out on the MS versions o.O
