Sony Vegas AVI issue!!!!!

Okay, I think people have heard this a million times by now. I'm having problems with AVI files in Vegas right. Yesturday, it worked perfectly. Then today, it is totally not working. All my AVI files used to work and now, it's not. Can anyone help?

I know that. I don't use Xvid or Divx files. It worked fine yesturday. Now it wouldn't...

are the files with a lagarith codec or other and you deletet the codecs? Or reinstall the codecs which the avi use, or are the avis uncompressed?

I have no clue. I just download the raws. I use raws from [MOD 403: redacted] for my videos.

You can either right click and go to the properties and see what codec they are or gspot them and see what codec they are... more than likely this is a "divx/xvid" issue, in which case that flashy banner should be a link as well

get gspot, it will tell you what codec a file is encoded with.
Raws probably means xvid, so get ready to fire up vdubmod and re-encode with lagarith or huffyuv.

And you really should be using dvds...

I've been using WMV's to edit in Sony Vegas because it's actually a codec that SV will accept.

Actually, I've got files that are in an .AVI container that have the WMV video codec. That may explain why editing the files is eating up so much processor time. :/

FWIW, the conversion from XVID/DIVX to AVI with WMV looks visually very nice compared to other codecs that Sony Vegas allows (which are few and far between). I have the WMV Pro codecs installed on my machine, and those seem to do very nicely indeed.

Hmmmmm.

I've tried DV before, etc. etc. Finding good conversion codecs has been a trial by fire, to say the least.

Guess I'm going to have to do more reading and experimenting.

Thanks kindly for the information on file types. I keep telling my husband that I need a book called "Video Conversion and Encoding for Complete Retards." If someone could write that up for me.........

WMV and DV codecs are lossy, you should use uncompressed, huffyuv or lagarith instead :/

Thanks for the push. I installed both. (I'd really like to eliminate the annoying lag during editing and playback within SV. And what point is there in doing it if I'm just going to screw it up?

I'm using (retail) Advanced X Video Converter. I... downloaded EO Converter, but so far I'm not really liking the way it works in comparison. I may have to goof around with it some more. That aside...

I'm using Lagarith at the moment to convert a batch of files so I can compare them to how the WMV's have been performing. I will say that the conversion process is going much faster. I'm using the Null Frame enabled on it because the video I'm using has, well, a lot of null frames.

I can say that SO far, the conversion is going really freakin' quick. How Sony Vegas handles the Null Frame prediction and the codec... that remains to be seen. I'll be updating on that progress when I get there. Thought y'all might like a peek into the inner workings of the newbie's mind.

'course, right now the newbie's mind has a killer migraine.

I haven't decided if it's from staring at the screen and reading specs or if it's because I own cats.
