Iraq War in New Transformers Movie
I just wanted to know if anybody else felt that placing themes of the Iraq war in the New Michael Bay Transformers adaptation is a bit tacky and hokey?
For instance, I used to be in the military myself and I went to Iraq for a couple of months, I even got to drive a truck around and take a look at all the cool weaponry and tanks and sh*t. For one thing, its cool to place politically-laced anecdotes and themes into a modern-day movie based on an anime series, since anime has a lot of military themes in it already. I just think its a bit crazy that they add contemporary themes and serious issues mentioned amidst the foreground of the interplay of the story (for instance a deceptacon emerging from the fasade of a MH-Pave III desert camoflauged chopper). I feel this is just wrong, and that they should stick mainly to the original back story.
For one, I think timely-ness is cool and all and it provides an emotional connection for the audience to respond to the characters, but I mean COME-ON people! This is The Transformers we're talking about. It simply does not mix.
At one time I even heard Hollywood was teaming with Peter Jackson to make a EVA movie and that The Wachowski Brothers are in fact making a Speed Racer film. I just hope that James Cameron does justice to his Battle Angel/Alita film coming out summer 2009 or something and that its cool rather than stinks. I think its neat that they're making Shia Labouf (I can't spell) one of the main characters, thats cool I suppose.

It's true, but don't forget that the people at GAiNAX also have a hand in it. Unfortunately, the project's been on hold for a while now, with no new news on it in at least a year.Zeiram999 wrote:At one time I even heard Hollywood was teaming with Peter Jackson to make a EVA movie...

You should put more trust into James Cameron. He knows how to properly use SFX. He mentioned often that Battle Angel Alita is a dream project of him since a long time ago. Hugo will surely die in a terrible way. Supersonic Martial Arts, Panzerkunst and Gehirn Umbau ftw. etc. etc. Also I can imagine that it will again be mostly his own money at stake. He is really interested in Alita.
For the Transformers Movie, I never watched any of the series and just can remember that Optimus Prime dying thingie of a movie. Never before saw the main villain outlive the main hero before. So that was memorable.
I don't really care for any staying true to canonical stories here. I just want to see some really awesome mecha hitting the shit out of each other while doing lots of collateral damage.
I even expect the rest of the movie to seriously suck. But as long as that rest of the movie is not as grinding like Spiderman 3 was I'm fine. What a terrible terrible movie.
I'm much more concerned how I will be able not to spoiler myself to death during the time between US and German release. While still being able to use the internets...
