Chrono Crusade question *spoilers*

I have just finished teh series in english and there was a part of it I was unsure about.

When Chrono wakes up by Mary Magadaeline(sp) and she says that he is in love with Rosette and that he wants to protect her. He says "Yes, I want to protect her so much that it covers your part of my heart" and in subtiles it says "To cover your share" and in a different subtitled verison "for your sake"

What did he mean by this?

Did he mean that he was protecting Rosette, to make amends to Mary Magdaeline?

Or because he wanted to protect Rosette so much that it was taking over his heart because he loved her?

I know this might be a stupid question and the answers probably obvious, I watched this ep really late at night so my head was cloudy. But did Chrono see Rosette as Mary Magdaeline, and he was trying to make amends to her by protecting her because of how she died. Or is he doing it for Rosette?

I loved the anime (see my avi, haha) and I took it as him finding similarities in Rosette that appeared in Mary and then realizing that he loves Rosette. I strongly think that he loves Rosette and wasnt doing it because of Mary.

Also another thing, I just picked up, when he said "she's crying" after Aion is holding Rosette, you see a flash of Mary crying. It's really confusing.

Sorry about this. I maybe overanalyazing this Rosette/Mary thing a bit too much.
