Anime is the ultimate form of expression. Free of our censorship bull. Free of Miss Chaney. Free of our fears(not compleatly unfounded) that we are so stupid that if we see it in a cartoon we're going to go do it. It wraps it's tenticles around every emotion we own from our sense of humor to our insatiable libido. It takes animation to a level america is too cowardly to even attempt. It is all encompassing, passionate and fearless.
Personally, I think anime to me is more a medical condition or an addiction than a passion. If I don't get a healthy dose every now and again, I get the shakes.

Personally I like anime because of the community. There's a lot of good American, British, etc. stuff out there but when was the last time you saw as many people united by a common interest as you do for anime? I love conventions, and I love the amv community as well. The only thing that even comes close is the Star Trek community, but that's far to stagnant in my opinion.
When I become an Evil Overlord my Legions of Terror will be an equal-opportunity employer. Conversely, when it is prophesied that no man can defeat me, I will keep in mind the increasing number of non-traditional gender roles.

I take anime pretty damn serious if you ask me. I remember freshman year at Santaluces High School, I was lost, lonely, and didn't have any friends...that's when I watched Escaflowne (in crappy dub of course) on Fox...and I absolutely loved the show, when it was cancelled I almost cried I was so sad.
I decided to look up Escaflowne online and I explored around and saw that it was an "anime" or an animation from Japan and I was like "WHOA! WHERE IS IT FROM?? ALL THE WAY FROM JAPAN??" I know I sound like a dumb ass but still, that's what I thought at the time!!
I slowly discovered more and more types of anime, fell in love with Japanese music, subtitled anime(THE BEST THING EVER), RPGs, other sorts of video games, and just anime in general. Eventually, I started going to conseling and I feel better about myself than I did way back in Middle school and at Santaluces...but I couldn't imagine my life without anime, there would be a huge gaping hole inside of my heart if I didn't have it. For God's sake I even draw anime (mostly my original characters) and I secretly want to make an anime someday too...but lets be realistic right?? ^^0
Anyway, that is why I watch anime.

Dang lots of good posts and points. Personally I don't care how many gun deaths there are anywhere because theres plenty of other kinds of deaths!! South park definitley ranks with any anime on controversial subjects as does family guy. I like american and japanese animation both. As to why I like anime? Well it certainly is very addictive to watch and it has lot's of cute chicks in it!!!

I could not have but it better myself. Plus most have a final eps which is both a strenght and a weakness depending on the anime.Anime Jedi wrote:To me, it's a way for my imagination to go crazy. Anime is a concept without (ok, little) boundries. It makes me feel free. There is so much to it, that, I will never understand it all. And what's great, is that it's normally not tied down to rules where certain things are allowed and not allowed (until it's dubbed and brought to the rest of the world).
Also, that it's so diverse. There is no age limit or restriction. You can almost do anything!
All in all, when I watch anime (depends on which one) I feel more at ease than watching anything else. I've found that my liking of other shows has dropped dramatically since I've been hooked on anime. But that's no big deal.

STEP AWAY FROM THE BALLOON. That's right! The balloon! You must be sucking helium. Anyway, CHINA"S POPULATION IS ONE OF THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD! IT IS ALSO A LARGE COUNTRY! Yes, people don't live all over it, because they are crammed in cities. Did you forget about the one child per family law? India has more people now, but only because of China's laws. Did you know that every month, all of China's women have to be inspected to see if they are pregnant?! If they are, and have already given birth, they have to have an abortion and and an operation making them sterile! Don't give me BS about less deaths because of guns! In JAPAN, (it was mentioned earlier) they cannot own their own guns. So with the exception of the mob, the general public doesn't have weapons, and therefore cannot use them to kill! Watch the Behind the Scenes documentary of Gunsmith Cats, it tells you about it. And the world maps are pretty much correct! You idiot, you are looking at a projection when you see a map! Yes, there is still SOME curve, but there is also the SAME curve on the United States, so you could still compare the two, as long as you are looking at the same projection! Haven't you ever wondered why it is a picture of an oval with the top and bottom cut off? Haven't you ever wondered why the lines of lattitude and longitude are curved? Are you a fucking RETARD?! I honestly think that whoever let you graduate was either drunk, or made you be their man whore. How did you PASS Social Studies? There are A LOT of factors in assumming the amount of gun deaths in a specific area! The Standard of Living, Crime Rates, Gun Control, Population, Land Area and a lot of other things! Anyway, I don't know why you started this argument, because everyone knows that the United States has a higher death by-way-of-gun rate then Japan. Also, four percent of the United States was uneducated two minutes ago, but you just made it five!Sub0 wrote:keep in mind china is about as sparse as Alaska or Russia. only a small % of it is livable also the world map doesn't tell the truth.
WHAT! don't look at me like that it's true! the sizes for certain countries are not as big as they seem because the earth is curved (with a big hump in the Pacific) so only physicall photographs tell the exact truth... better to just look up how many kms it is and such. btw AFAIK India has the largest population density yet there's probly more gun deaths in Rhode Island (New Jersey ;-p in particular).

Okay, I am SO getting my Mom to read this thread, or not. She thinks we are all losers with a severe lack of a life! I can get really into some animes. I'll think about them when I'm walking to school, or before I go to sleep. And some, have made me cry when I watch them. My daddy is the greatest, because when he saw Oh! My Goddess, he said it was so amazing that someone could express so much emotion with such a small amount of detail, and he's right. It isn't just the art, it's the characters. I know some people that are in love with anime characters... I think it is unfair for someone like my mother to critisize me for loving anime so much when she wouldn't dare miss ER, friends, or Gilmore Girls. It's just an alternate reality that we can escape to.
