I've read the majority of posts on this thread and here's my take on it. First off, I'm a very big Kenshin fan, so obviously this will be a plug.
NME: Trust me, Kenshin is *good* although it is longer than 26 episodes. It's not that they milk it, but if you have a good story, it could be well over 26 episodes. Would you like Lord of the Rings to be just one movie? Or perhaps the Star Wars Trilogy to be...one movie?
A few people have mentioned skipping the end (after Kyoto), but have gotten the numbers wrong. Basically watch 1 - 12, 23 - 24, 28 - 62, the Movie and then finally the OVA (trust me, you should watch it AFTER the show). The reason I list such odd numbers is that these are the episodes based on the Manga. As many of you know, most anime is based off of Manga and in this case, episodes 13 - 22, 25 - 27, 63 - 95 are not based on the Manga. They are literally Sony making up random stories (that are NOT good. Kenshin fighting the Sumo Wrestlers comes to mind or perhaps the Circus episode).
Basically when an anime is being produced while the Manga is still going on, there are three things the show can do while waiting to continue the "real" story: 1) Draw things out. A good example is Dragonball Z. Ever wonder why there are episodes upon episodes of powering up and talking? If you read the manga DBZ is quite short and is actually alright. 2) Make random episodes until the next Manga book comes out. 3) Just wait.
Sony took path 2 and made some BAD episodes. For those that are curious, that's the reason the OVA was the only continuation of the story. The OVA is actually a flashback that takes place immediately after Kyoto and leads to the "Revenge Arc" with Enishi (Tomoe's brother). I'd highly recommend watching *only* these episodes since you won't get bored out of your mind and quit early. To miss the Kyoto arc would be quite unfortunate. I've never seen a show do 34 episodes of consistent and powerful story, but Kenshin does it with Kyoto.
So Chaos Angel, although I agree that before 28 Kenshin is a little slow, bear with it. Kyoto is well worth it. Also, the first 14 episodes I mentioned are to introduce characters, motivations, etc. They are essential to make the remainder of the story effective.
Along the dub argument, I am definitely an "elitist" or whatever you want to call it and I would strongly suggest watching a subtitled or raw version. Of course, if you are poor I guess watching the dub would be alright since it'll get the basic across, but there are a lot of things that the japanese voice actors do that convey things a lot more. For example, Kenshin speaks in a dialect that most samurais used during those days (the degozaru at the end of verbs instead of the common desu). The dub just has him repeat the line like "I am Kenshin, yes I am." You can see how retarded this is (although I don't know how they could imply the different dialect). Also Kenshin has two "personalities" and the dub does a bad job...you'll see I guess.
In any case, I hope this helps out. I apologize for the lengthy post, but Kenshin is one of my favorite shows and it would be unfortunate to miss out on such an amazing story. You'll also see why I love Soujirou so much

I havent seen Kenshin.........and frankly I am not going to watch it on CNX (oh and will probably.....eventually come to the UK). Too many animes have been butchered due to dubbing...or at least have some terrible moments.
With the mention of 26 episodes. I think at times, that amount is just too short. It would of been great if some animes I've watched just put 2 or 3 extra episodes in at points to develop characters, relationships, etc.
However I did only say "at times", some animes are great with 26 eps or less.

Well this is how I see it...
I'm going to take on the classes of japanese for a few years, then I'll watch the japanese versions. I like blood, and I like to see the swords cut, not a bunch of they strike and then a picture of two circles and a star shows up for 3 seconds...
either way I've got the japanese OVA of Samurai x and it looks so much better.

Funny that this is actually a step-up from what I think of it . I believe the episode immediately following Kyoto is the fisherman. Let me "SPOIL" the episode for you: Kenshin talks to a fisherman. THE END.After Kyoto, It was farmer John time. Might as well stop there.
What's after that? Oh yeah the uber-anti-Christian arc, then random fillers (although I found the dog episode and Aoshi one funny) and then the next big arc...the ARMPIT PEOPLE! AHHHH!! You think I'm kidding? The last villains are people whose weakness is in the armit. AHHHHHH! Shishio to armitpit ppl?

amakusa shougo was a cool bastard although his sister was so annoying, pious little bitch but she say the light in the end. You forgot the Valentines Day episode, the one where that artist guy falls for Kaoru, I love that one, and the Nataro(wasn't that his name?) one. You still can't beat the Shishio saga, not with a big stick.
Aye your ma's Keyzer Soze!
