Agreed, the series ended for me when Vegeta blew himself up trying to kill Buu.

I do admit to being a fan of it for a while. Until it seemed like the new episodes were reruns.

For me the whole thing ended after the Android saga. Or at least it should've. Just long enough to introduce Trunks and re-introduce Red Ribbon. And I pretend Garlic Jr. never happened

And agreed, I do find the DBZ reruns have a higher entertainment factor. Sorta like G Gundam as compared to the rest of the Gundam saga (the other series ARE technically better, but G has way more entertainment factor). Sometimes I'd rather point and laugh than get my brain fried

In all technical aspects EVA is a far better show. However, I personally find DBZ more entertaining than EVA, and would much rather watch senseless, inconsistantly animated fight scenes then watch Shinji complain.
very true. :)

For me the show peeked at the end of the freeza saga. After that it just got boring and repetative. When freeza in my view point is the best villian of DBZ. If you dis agree here is where I am coming from:

1. He is self centered and only fights for his own purposes not anyone else.

2. He was not created. He was born and become powerful on his own.

3. Could not regenerate. This single factor made him the greatest villian. After they introduced the ability to regenerate, DBZ became lame. A true villian has enough power to not get his head blown off.

4. He had a purpose in life, unlike other villians Freeza actually wants to accomplish something in life. Buu was only created to destroy the universe and Cell was created for vengence.

There are many other factors but over explaining DBZ is a waste of time. To my original point, it peaked at the freeza saga and only become filler episodes after that.

I guess first off, I don't like DBZ the anime that much since it's (IMHO) just filler and powering up and then maybe five minutes of actual content. I read the manga when I was a child (~5 years old). It's a lot better since there isn't ridiculous amounts of panels to powering up or long drawn out speeches. Those "episodes" don't exist in the Manga and they were only made because the manga book wasn't out to be animated. I understand this, so no big deal.

In any case, I think the overall "plot" and "fights" of DBZ is fine, but in Manga form. Essentially take about 5 minutes from each episode that is "content" and that's the manga.

As for the peak of the show, I personally liked the end of the Cell Arc the most. I agree with MAS about Freeza and his reasons, but I just liked the climax of Gohan becoming the new hero of Earth and surpassing his father. Also Cell had a cooler character design (IMHO). They could've (and should've) ended there since it implied that Gohan would protect the earth and so on. The Buu arc...well...no comment.

I agree with Frieza being a better villain than both Cell and Buu, but I think that Vegeta is even better, because he is not a generic pure evil character. There are other factors unfluencing his decisions, not just because he is eeeeeviiiiiil.

Toriyama did intend to end DBZ after Freeza.

While Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun are among my favotire series, I have to say DB and DBZ are also one of my most favorites, mostly because of Gokou. I mean, sure, the plot sux (after the Freeza Saga), and the action is repetitive, but thats not why I like it so much.
I basically grew up with Gokou. :D I mean, back in mexico before i moved here, I watched DB everyday after school. I mean, i was so attached to the series. When Kuririn died (the first time), i was like "O Santa Madre!" or when Gokou first grew up, it was great. The years passed and I moved here to the U.S., where I got the dose of DBZ. While it wasn't as good, it was still great to watch my favorite anime character who grew up alongside with me.
Ofcourse, after watching 78 seconds of DBGT on the International Channel, I threw away my Gokou action figure out the window.
