I think Mononoke shows what a bad director can do with good actors and a budget... you have some good performances and some very bad ones. I think Mononke is a B- as far as Dubbing goes...
With other Disney titles... they use their own directors... people who have worked there for some time and know what they want to go for...
With Kiki and Mononoke, they were working with a voice director they didn't know...
and with Spirited Away, they had Lassiter, who did all the Pixar movies.
However... I must move to your other points. Disney DIDN'T MAKE Natural Born Killers and Pulp Fiction. They did buy out Miramax (and I think Pulp Fiction was made before Disney bought Miramax)
I mean... Disney bought the distribution rights to release the Ghibli films and they were able to use Miramax for distribution of Mononoke because of its violent content.
It's a very tangled web... and I agree with the spirit of what you're saying... but I still have to defend Disney only because it is one of the only good animation studios in the United States... and Disney made the first full length feature film that was animated.
Disney has done a lot for the animation industry even if they do a lot of dark things behind the scenes.
I will not argue with you about the "Kimba" thing... the worst part was when Disney tried to pretend they had "never heard of Kimba the White Lion"! COME ON!
On the other hand... I get very annoyed at anime fans who go after Disney for "Atlantis" saying it is a blatant rip off of "Nadia". The result of that little tiff really made anime fans look bad...
None-the-less... I urge that you try to do what you can to encourage US animation studios with POSITIVE messages.
When Disney released Kiki's Delivery Service, they released 2 VHS tapes... a dub and a sub...
Disney didn't have to do that. They were under NO OBLIGATION to appease anime fans... They could have just released a dub-only copy and sell it to the families who are willing to buy ANYTHING for their kids so long as it is labled as a family film.
Instead, they released a subtitled Kiki's that was letterboxed and had all the extra music removed.
I instantly called up the office of Disney (spending 20 minutes of getting transferred) just to voice my great thanks for Disney respecting the people who would want an authentic version of the film. The person in the office was so pleased to hear a reaction from people who cared... and honestly admitted that I was the first anime fan who had called in about the movie.
When Disney was going to release an English only DVD of Mononoke, there was a great outcry... at least on anime message boards)
Disney heard about the outcry and gave out an address where people could send their concerns about the Mononoke DVD.
Just a little over 1000 people mailed. (Anime Expo has an attendence of over 10,000 anime fans, and not even 15% of that number could be bothered to write a letter)
Sometimes, the apathy of the anime fans leads to problems.
I mean... if there is a crappy dub... but anime fans all buy the dub... then what does that tell the dubbing company???
It tells them that they don't need to shell out extra money to make better dubs because anime fans will buy anime no matter how bad the dub is.
While I am not the most active person when it comes to this topic...
I did support a group that was trying to get Sailor Moon back on a Massachusetts TV station (they had it and then they cancelled it because of conservative groups). Even though I had never seen the show, I supported its return.
I did send in 3 different petitions to get Kiki on DVD
I helped spread the e-mail address to contact Disney and request the Mononoke DVD have BOTH English and Japanese language
I called Disney to compliment them on the subtitled release of Kiki on VHS
I called Disney to compliment them on the Gargoyles tv show (after their episode with the message on the danger of playing with guns)
Anyway... I'm rambling and I'm tired now... so I'm gonna stop here.

There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who divide people into two kinds of groups
and those who don't.

Man this reply is gonna take awhile .
(nod nod). Well like I said I think Mononoke isn't as bad as most dubs. Like you said yourself B- .UncleMilo wrote:I think Mononoke shows what a bad director can do with good actors and a budget... you have some good performances and some very bad ones. Well I won't argue details since you see what I'm saying with the "agree with the spirit" statement. Basically I don't like the image they use as their "face" (a loving family company) and their true nature (a big corporation). Not that there's anything wrong with that from a business perspective, but I guess for me it feels weird in an honor/moral sort of way.UncleMilo wrote:However... I must move to your other points. I agree on the Atlantis thing. I think it has *some* similarities, but by NO means blatant rip off. I think *some times* anime fans really grasp at things to try and make anime look better than other forms of animation, but Kimba is the one that really makes me angry.UncleMilo wrote:Disney has done a lot for the animation industry even if they do a lot of dark things behind the scenes.

I won't go into your specifics, but you may be surprised, but I agree. I read in another thread (in some other thread) that it's kind of good that Disney got Miyazaki things and started this "anime on the big screen" thing. What other company has the ability to even *try* this?I think we should be thankful that Disney has chosen to be fairly "good" about it too. Basically, the argument that I was "sold" on is that Disney is the only one who has the manpower, resources, image, etc. to even try and put anime on the bigscreen.UncleMilo wrote:None-the-less... I agree. It's one thing to complain about bad anime and another to do something about it. I guess that's just about the case with any "cause" you believe in. I think our apathy to some of things done in anime is our own downfall. Bravo on the things you have done though.UncleMilo wrote:Sometimes, the apathy of the anime fans leads to problems.

i saw spirited away last nite and i thought it was awesome since i like all of studio ghibli's films i olmost pissed my pants when i saw the preview to it although not as good as some of studio ghibli's films i actually liked spirited away better than princess mononoke
one more thing:i couldnt stop laughing for like 15 minutes after shichiro (i really hope thats right) busted her face on the wall after running down those stairs. not that that has to do with the discussion i just had to mention it

meh, that sucks, kinda like Brampton ... the last thing i saw at a theater near here that vaguely resembled anime wsa Final Fantasy ... if you want anime here, you have to go buy it, hope the cartoon network plays it, or download it. Since i hate TV i just download it and if i like it i buy it. As for spirited away, i saw it yesterday, it was an interesting movie, i can kind of understand how it was aimed at kids. But i thought it was pretty good.Tondog38 wrote:Dang! I was hoping that I would finally get a chance to see it, but no such luck! It is not coming to my local theater AGAIN!!! Yet again, we get no anime here.

And that's all that really matters, isn't it? Hooray for simplicity. Twas a great movie, indeed.
