Well folks, Whats next...

Speak your mind, because lately there are new threads out, and to tell you all the truth, they are quite boring, so let me hear what you think we should talk about...

This was actually something me and my college roommate got into a rather long discussion about, though it might not be on par with such otaku scholars such as yourselves. 8)

We were discussing why it seems required, in a large number of anime, to call out the name of an attack before executing it. Why do you think so? Extra flare, honor, a flair for the dramatic?

I'm all ears.

Its quite simple, attacks wouldnt be cool without them. If the shot a beam or did some type of special attack they want the kids at home or whoever the audience its targeted twords to rember that spcific move. So in turn when you and your friends have a mock battle you will be saying the moves and attempting to do them without success. I still find myself saying stuff from DBZ and my friend yelling back at me as if hes powering up. Its all about impounding the moves into your head so you will never forget EVER!

I personally think it's stupid because it doesn't seem like a soliloquy, which mean basically they are telling their opponet what manuever they are going to execute. Hence giving their enemy the advantage of being able to block it.

But thats the beauty of it! noone does it. It gives them a bigger boost in power. The longer they say the attack the more power it does. Its like charging up. I think its pretty damn sexy

I believe in the Saijen (Probably misspelled) saga, Krillin yelled "DESTRUCTO-DISC!" Which caused Vegeta to turn around and dodge the attack. The yelling was explained as the give away when vegeta pointed out his big ears he had in his transformed state.

Therefore I submit to you that yelling a moves name before execution is not advisible.

Krillin said the attack, but it wasn't until after he'd thrown it that Vegeta noticed and dodged. I good point brought up was that, like most battles in anime, there's a certain amount of honor in it. If they know a big attack is coming, it's more honorable to take it head on. If they survive, not only have they proven their own strength but now their opponent has to do one better in order to regain his honor.

Just a bit of input on my part. 8)

Why do they yell attack names?

I always figured part of it was to be easier for fans to identify them...
Let's face it, saying, for example
"Then Goku fired off a massive Kamehameha"
Certainly sounds better than
"Then Goku shot this huge ball of blue energy from his hands..."

Just a thought

I thought it had to do with the culture. Going back to the days of real honor where you don't stab the guy in the back. Where as a ninja doesn't, they will take whatever advantage they can take. Just a thought. That's where I always thought it came from.

I think that the calling of moves is quite ... a waste of time ... because just seeing the move being done is better....
