Although I'd seen five-second clips of Pokemon, DBZ, etc. while doing other things, the first anime that I actually sat down and watched was Eva.

For those who haven't seen Eva, this is like crack being your first experience with drugs...

First anime I sat down and watched was the movie Totoro, and this was before i even knew about anime. But the first actual series I must say I watched with a sick passion was either Pokemon or DBZ.

My 1st anime? Bastard, on VHS. I found volume 1 and 2, and never found 3.

:(

Then, later on in life, God smiled at me with a DVD release of all 3.

Gah...hmm... first anime I watched was Dominon Tank Police, back in the early 90's when Sci Fi had it's Saturday Anime.
First series - I have to confess, it was Dragonball Z.
First anime I bought? Perfect Blue dubbed on VHS.

I think you misunderstood. I was not comparing Eva directly to Crack (although that's a pretty good comparison). I was comparing watching Eva as your first anime to using Crack as your first drug: afterward, nothing else is quite as good or strong.
