Perhaps there is none. But one can certainly look for the hidden inspiration.
That's a really good perspective, I like that

i dunno abt dante, is the anime he is in any good?

but the similarities btwn alucard and vash are indeed uncanny. confident, red trenchcoat, gloves(arguable), long silver gun, hated by many, not to mention, severly misunderstood and mysterious characters to the other characters in the cast.

red is teh color of passion. they talk abt determination in trigun, associated with red geraniums. alucard isn't your most passionate fanatic in any aspect, but he does respect integra to a fault, willing do die for her if need be(still not sure if he's killable)

my guess to a meaning would be that if a protagonist is given power, and has control over it, would s/he prevail over evil thats in the same level with the hero? alucard ain't your average good guy, but he did fight incognito, the greater of two evils and saved the world. vash, he definitely is your ultimate goody-goody hero.

other famous character that wears red is milliardo in gundam wing, that guy is so damn passionate and driven by emotion, he falls off the page, if there is a scale.

i disagree with the person who said screw meaning. whats the point of picking good titles in anime over others, then? i think its safe to speak for most ppl that watching fan service, think-with-your-gun anime 24/7 is going to get tedious, if not downright repulsive.(probably explaining all the DBZ hate that floats around in the general anime series)
