Holy crap, episode 6 explained a LOT!
Apparently, a bunch of rogue hackers are using an online game (or games?) to collect the psi energy of children, and channeling it into creating all sorts of bizarre illusions in the real world. They may even be manipulating the children that play this game (and maybe even Lain herself). So much wierd shit in the show can be attributed to this...
Seven episodes to go. Let's rock on.

Dammit. That was even more disappointing that the Evangelion TV ending! You know, they had so much good momentum going in episode 12, with Lain sort of waking up and telling the god-wannabe to go screw himself and having that pseudo-lesbian moment with Arisu... and then she pissed it all away in episode 13 and erased herself from existence. They didn't explain any of that wierd shit that happened, and I feel like I've just wasted four or five hours of my life.
There isn't an "End of Lain" movie that replaces episode 13, is there?
