Does anyone actually like dubbing????????

if the dub is good i'll watch it but usually expressions are shown better in origonal language (like the scene in the first episode of RahXephon in the subway when Ayato meets up with Asahina, it just doesn't sound right in english :p)

I thought RahXephon actualy had a decently done dub, but i still prefer to watch it in japanese ... they never do Quon's "rah-rah" right ... it sounds really stupid in english.

Why?

Because I don't know how anyone could answer such a sweeping question.

Some dubs are good and some dubs suck donkey and that's all there is to it.

I prefer to get anime in Japanese with subtitles because I like to hear anime in the original language. I was brought up on foriegn films and so I just happen to like to hear the film as it was intended.

However... there are 3 dubs that I actualy get rather than the Japanese

1) Star Blazers - First off, as far as I know, most of Yamato is only available in English and so I don't have much of a choice. However... since I watched Star Blazers as a kid... and it is the reason I am an anime fan today... I get the dub for nostalgia reasons

2) Ranma 1/2 - Again... this show was originally only available in English... so I've stuck with it that way. I think it's a good dub, but now that Ranma's on DVD, I watch it in Japanese. I like both equally.

3) Cowboy Bebop - This is the ONLY dub where I think the English version is superior to the Japanese... in 20 years of being an anime fan, I have never said that about a title. The Bebop dub is just spot on.

Some other dubs I think are good include

Spirited Away - An excellent job done by John Lassiter (if I spelled his name right). The first two Disney dubs of Ghibli were directed by this voice director who has a career filled with bad dubs... and his bad direction continued to show on the Ghibli dubs. I was so relieved when Disney cleaned up its act and got a voice director who knows what he is doing (and has shown in the past his understanding of the craft).

NieA_7 - While I watch the Japanese on this, I think this is a top quality dub (and that's not just because I'm friends with the voice director). A lot of care went into the casting and the voice direction and the dub shows.

Anyway...

I refuse to talk about bad dubs, but there are some titles where the voice acting just makes me want to tear my out my ear drums with a nail.

There are some dubs that are "ok", but really seem to miss the mark on the underlying themes of the series.

I'm just glad DVD allows people to make their own choice.

i dont supose anyone here sees it this way, and maybe its already been said, but this is whats kinda askuew about this way of thinking. the japanise diolog is entended for a japanise audence, when you just directly transulate it with subs, YOU as the english speeking indivdual have already lost what ever "insight" you were looking for, cuz you rnot a part of their culture or their way of life. when a company wants to dub this, they take that into account, and transulat the MEANING and the true FEELINGS of the diolog, and not just verbatem the EXSACT words.

a good example of this was a german movie i saw a wile ago where someone called someone els a pig. and the guy like fliped out, went all murderous and in a blind rage. i thought to myself, whats the big deal? i have been called worse, but over in germany its like OMG you just called me a pig, its like the worst thing you can call someone. and because it was a subed movie, and im not german, i lost the true feeling of the movie, and thus lost what the makers of the movie wanted me to get. now had it been dubed with the "insight" that some anime dubbers put into it, i might have gotting that same feeling as a german person would have....

see my point? its not just tranuslating words, its emotions and culture. you cant do that with just words. inflections int he voice and accents are what make diolog meaningfull, and you can transulate that

Uhm, you obviously didn't read that line correctly because I said "originally-intended language." Since VHD:B was made in English (as was it's intent), I watched it in English. I said earlier that it wasn't this universal Japanese thing. VHD was originally done in English and thus that is the creator's wishes and I watch it that way.

As for Tenchi, I have not seen this and yes, I do hate Tenchi so I'm sure I would hate this too.

I think you're misinterpretting what they're saying or at least how I feel. I do agree that translations can take away slightly, but first off, not as much as dub translations where they change entire statements to fit mouth movements (this is fact).

However, the main thing (I think) Warpwind was getting at (as well as I am getting at), is that the original voices have the original intents and emotions that the creator wanted. They were involved in the process and thus, it is more true to the original since it is only subtitled as opposted to DUBBED OVER. One has one less iteration of change.

And yes, the voices DO matter. They have their original intent in emotional content, stressing of words, etc. Maybe it's not a big deal to some (and thus why I stand by my: live and let live philosophy), but it is to me. At the same time, I still get angry when people say "better than the original" since that is impossible by the very definition of the word dub (to dub over).

That's a pretty good way of putting it. Some anime we see the translation as, "you idiot!" And then the one being insulted either laughs, or just goes nuts and outright kills the other person... Technically, it's pretty much impossible to do a direct translation of anything... It's all on how close the ADR directors are at keeping the VAs in check. [for those that don't know, ADR = Advanced Dialogue Replacement and VA = Voice Actors...]

Now if I could watch my anime RAW, THAT'D be the perfect reason to see it in Japanese. I also like it when the Dub turns out more "coherent" than the sub... [Elf Princess Rane and Nadesico come to mind...] Bah, it's the actors' fault that some anime people just hate dubs to no end... Ah well...

Ehehe.. I HAVE to watch ALL my anime in SUBS only!

I detest the English dubs.... It seems the English voice actors aren't really trying to act out the character correctly! But with the Japanese voice acting, the characters personalities are made more clear !
