Bite your tongue and you die?

What's the deal behind this?

I saw this in Rurouni Kenshin and Naruto, and apparently if you bite your tongue you kill yourself?

Sure when I accidentally bite my tongue it may bleed or something, but nothing really life threatening right?

Maybe from bleeding?

there is some kind of big vain or artery in your tong and soposably if u bit your tong off you will bleed to death. iv read this and heard it in a few places like history books becouse back in the day soliders would do this so that they would not tell any information by getting tortuerd. so im pretty sure its true

Heh, the girl in the original Vampire Hunter D threatened to do that as well. And even if you don't bleed to death, you should be able to drown yourself on the blood if you inhale it. I could see that as a method of suicide, odd, but it should work.

Also, if you bite off a large enough chunk, you might choke on it.

I bit the end of my tongue off on my first day of school =/ Fell off some monkey bars and caught the very tip.

That's why I avoid climbing. Or eating hastily. I've had numerous instances of parts going missing in my mouth...

I was about to mention that, anyway, I just see it as a way of showing how devoted you are (for example she showed her devotion to her brother) that you would take the task of biting your tongue off to threaten others. Just a newbies opinion.

This should go in General Off Topic.

And yeah, there's a major artery in your tongue. Although it's highly unlikely you'll bleed to death, since you'd probably either (a) choke on the piece of tongue or (b) drown in blood.
