Check out Last Exile
Last Exile is about the best anime series I've ever seen. It does everything perfectly.
10 times more CGI than any other series, used in tremendous detail on machinery and vehicles. The technologies, both Guild 22nd century and Jules Verne 19th century, are fascinating. They even use steam-powered rifles, hooked up a central boiler with hoses!
The equipment, vehicles, architecture, even furnishings are intricate, interesting, and consistently designed. The costumes are just plain gorgeous. Clearly a tremendous amount of work went in to the designs.
It's what I would expect from a much larger budget movie. The art overall is beautiful and meshes perfectly with the CGI. It has that state-of-the-art pastel feel of RahXephon (a disjointed disappointment) and Wolf's Rain.
The story is exciting, inspiring, deep, and consistent (mostly; you know how they are). The ending is uplifting and well-timed with all the pieces pulled together.
The characters are engaging and lovable. Alvis is the cutest thing since Sumomo. There's lots of great CGI airship action, adventure, comedy, and a touch of romance. Quite Ghibli-esque. The music is evocative and harmonious with the theme of the series.
I ended up watching all 26 episodes in 2 days. I just couldn't stop! I really can't think of a better overall anime. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it.

I only saw the first few eps before it got licensed, but it was damn spiffy.
I wish they'd show more of those steam-powered musket battles... that really made it fresh/creative.
I saw it up to when they finally included some of those white mech-loking things that're in the opening. Pretty neat, but the musket stuff was way more original.
did I mention the musket stuff was pretty sweet?
