Utena?!?!?! What the %$#@

Post by slayers1010 » Fri Nov 14, 2003 8:58 am

Please, some one out there please. The ending of this makes no sense to me what so ever. I got the Final Arch on Monday and I have watched to the end. It just did not get it at all. So I figured I better watch the whole thing from beginning to end with out interruption. Well I did that Thursday. I watched the whole thing in one sitting and you know what. I am still lost at the ending of this.
I would not be so angry at this if others gave me a hard time like this is but I understood Evangelon and heck even FLCL made some sense to me, but this one is kicking me while I am down. I am looking for peoples comprehension of this ending and what it means. I do not want to walk away from the series with a bad taste in my mouth because I did really like it, till the end. And it is ruining it for me. HELP PLEASE

Everyone dies. How hard is it to understand? It's anime. Everyone always dies.

If I rememeber, the entire premise is that the Academy is a fantasy world metaphor for childhood/adolescence. Doing what you want to do, in your own little world, and so on. Anthy leaves and steps out into the "real world" where she can grow up and make her own decisions. Or something to that effect.

I still have the article from the now defunct magazine Anime Fantastique which explained everything about the series. But I don't have time right now to dig it out.

The ending of Utena totally confused me too until I read some of the great Utena websites that have been written by people who read the manga, which apparently makes a bit more sense.

SPOILERS!!!

Basically the idea is that in the end Akio is defeated and the swords switch from attacking Anthy to attacking him, and I believe his planetarium (which controls the various illusions of the academy e.g. the upside-down-castle and the hall where the black rose duelists get brainwashed by Mikage) is destroyed. This is also a victory of utena over herself, if you remember the stained-glass windows that break as she defeats each duelist who represents some weakness in herself. It's kind of iffy what happens to Anthy and Utena at the end, but one interpretation is that they have escaped the egg of the academy into the adult world. If you watch the Utena movie you get a different interesting perspective on it because it tells the same story with different details.

Spoiler wrote:How I see it is that Utena was finally able to reach the real Anthy that has been locked away since she tried to save her brother from dying. The Anthy that we saw was just a shell. She was a puppet. Sometimes real Anthy would pop out but she would be brought back to her eternal pain and blank out again. When Utena reached her she opened up Anthy's soul. Anthy could live again. When things got reset Utena became the lost one. It now became Anthy's turn to become the prince and save her princess. She know Utena is out there in the real world somewhere but she has to find her. I think this could be said for the movie too. SPOILERS HERE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE! When Utena turned into a car Anthy was in control of their destinies. She is doing that now. It's in her control to bring back the friendship they had. @_@ This is too much.

Os this is more of a coming of age ending, saying "It is time to think for myself and not do what people think I should do, but what I want to do." Or do you think I am still missing the point here ??
