2003, The year of the drag?

Post by Declan_Vee » Wed Dec 03, 2003 4:32 am

A lot of people I've been talking to have been anything but impressed by the quality of Anime releases this year. And I'd have to say that I agree.

Sure we've had a few here and there that have been OK, and even a couple that were just awesome. But as a whole I feel almost let down.
I dunno. Maybe by not watching _everything_ I'm letting a lot of great stuff slip under my radar.

How does the board feel about the year so far?

Kind of weak, I think. Although there were some good things, like "Narutaru" and "Nanake 6/17".
I'm out...

I've actually liked a lot of the 2003 releases, I'm not disappointed at all.

I have been very happy also. Didnt always like the way they ended but there were a large number of shows that I very much liked.

Any chance you people could list the good anime released this year so we know what we're missing? :)

Are we talking about truly new series that aired in Japan in 2003, or liscensed series that were released on DVD overseas? For now I'll assume it's the former, so here's a list of what I (dis)liked:

Liked:

Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Read or Dream (Read or Die TV)
Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito
Popotan
Spiral: Lines of Reasoning

Disliked:

Gungrave
Gunslinger Girl
Bottle Fairy
Magical Nurse Witch Komugi-chan
Sakigake!! Cromartie Koukou
Raimuiro Senkitan

As you can see, for me at least the year has been kind of a mixed bag. I know there are some other ones out there that people have been raving about, (Full Metal Alchemist, Avenger, etc.), but I haven't seen them. That's why I left them out.

I liked Wolf's Rain, Millenial Actress and Texhnolyze, the rest is either fanservice or just disappointing.

I feel your pain. I think the reason I and others feel burned out on the poor quality of anime this year is because most of us are already familiar with anime from the past, comparing it to today. It was new and "cool" then, but now it's so familiar we expect more and are simply not seeing it. Yeah there were a few surprises but nothing over the top spectacular like classic series I fell in love with.

And as for the future, it will take something totally unique and unexpected to really make an impact on me - much like Haibane Renmei, Alien 9, and Figure 17 did for me.
