Actually Kenshin was based on a real ruoroni from the Meiji Era. I forget the whole story, but I know there was something about this guy whom Kenshin was modeled after in the first volume of the Manga.UncleMilo wrote:

I wouldnt say anime is racist because if you look at the different kinds of anime there are a lot of diverse people. I mean everyone is different. Some are different colors, different outfits, and have powers, and some even have designs on their face. Everyone looks different.

I think you're mistaking kenshin for ninjascroll (/jubichan) as to which the main character was based of a man name jubli he had an eyepatch though which most of the anime's dont tend to place in on him.

I think a bit too much is being read into this. I mean as one person said, just about anything can be racist if you anylyze it enough. And truth told, I'd hate for anime to start introducing a sort of "political correctness", it would mean token characters being introduced just for the sake of having either a black/brown/asian/white etc person in it.

Well... not to be nit-picky, but that would still make Kenshin fictional, even if he is based on a real guy. In "Last Samurai", the man that Tom Cruise helps is also based on a real guy, but these are still fictional accounts.Three-Legged Dog wrote:Actually Kenshin was based on a real ruoroni from the Meiji Era. However... Kenshin does have many real people show up in the series (and I'm pleased the notes on the DVD mention this)
Anyway... I'd like to learn more about the guy Kenshin is based on.
Thanks!

I just wanted to add to what Milo said. You guys seriously have the wrong idea about asia and Japan if you think they're all happy and open to new people. Quite the opposite. As Milo has said, Japan the country/people/culture is pretty xenophobic. If you're non-asian, go to Japan and see if they treat you differently. If they look at you strangely and stare. If they whisper to each other and you *know* they're talking about you even though you don't know what you're saying.
I only know this because I'm Korean and have been to Korea a few times (as well as Japan once) and even though I'm asian, I can still see how my fellow people treat foreigners (and obviously also understand what is being said).
At the same time, don't get me wrong and get scared off. It's not *that bad* in that we hang foreigners or something. It's just a general uneasiness around those different from you. Again, not to the point of violence or *major* changes of behavior, but still changes nontheless.
Again, I think some of you have some misconceptions of Japan which I can understand. Hopefully this won't discourage you from going though.
Oh and you're right Milo, the Japanese and Koreans aren't too fond of each other. It's what happens after one country enslaves the other for awhile .
