1) it sells

I wouldn't even have read this if I wasn't really bored tonight.
Hotaru/Sailor Saturn - Nothing real special in looks, pretty average, actually. Good-natured and gentle, but can hold her ground when she wants to. Has gone through hell for most of her life, plus the burden of being able to wipe out everything on a planet with little effort. She does go to pieces sometimes, anyone would, but it doesn't leave her helpless for very long, and she's reliable in battle where it really counts. Doesn't sound too degrading.
Misa Hayase(Macross) - Strong willed, career-oriented, not much of a push-over here. Still maintains a sensitive side though, and she does break down from time to time, but virtually never when she's needed in battle(or elsewhere).
The other Sailor Senshi vary, with some being stereotypes to an almost scary degree. Most of the females in Macross are not degrading(except maybe Minmei..argh). Southern Cross is another example, strong-willed women with real goals, "normal" bodies and a human, sensitive side.
Anime can be degrading to women, but it can be the exact opposite. Just depends on which ones you watch.
Now that I'm done talking political correctness, I'm going to go watch Jungle de Ikou and drool over the big, jiggly boobies.

Well thought out and qualified information, I have to admit.
Let me put it this way. Ok, anime isn't the Politically Correct media you may think it is, but at least they try to switch some gender roles around!
My point being, Late night cable is much, much worse
Oh, you forgot one thing. Feminine-connotated mechs.
*pulls out bibliography*
Athena, Angelic Layer.
Nephtis, Zone of the Enders.
That one biological mechtype chara from RahXephon*
* That is NOT "Metronome"
Yes. Have you seen the Japanese "AV girl" types? The media is saturated with them.
In fact, a popular food sauce/paste product was advertised with the Chef and the AV character dancing/singing to a product jingle while holding product and food, then singing-chanting some sort of promotional message while smiling at the audience and showing you the product being mixed with food, all with text flowing across the creen. The advert ends with Chef and AV eating it (smiling still)...
Sort of like:
Text: "Super Product 2004"
PromoGuy/AVgirl: Super Product 2004, inconveniences are no more!
PromoGuy/AVgirl: Fixs your problems while you snore!
AVGirl: Open the package...
PromoGuy: Just mix it in with nuts and bolts...
AVGirl: That's all you have to do
PromoGuy: And you're done!
* shows Promoguy mixing it in with nuts and bolts
* then AVgirl dumping mixture on a flowerpot
PromoGuy/AVgirl: Wow! It's cool!
Can you say MEDIA?

Truly depends on where you live.
Where I live, equalty(sp??) between the two genders is one of the greatest.
It is said that there are even more severe cases of women beaten up their husbands over husbands beaten up their wives. But of course, women are always the ones pitied so we hardly ever hear about wives beaten up their man.
The human society is complex, women aren't the only ones suffering.
Besides, some stuff IS made for women.
Hentai attracts men, yaoi attracts women.
In animes, women aren't always degraded.
Sometimes men are degraded too. (Or I'm misjudging something here.)
That was my 2 cents no different than the others.

And applying that to anime: YES is that men we see with a "sensitive" side? Or passive-submissive role? My, that is! And vice versa.
Last time I checked, we're having (male characters) in Anime pulled into conflict and placed in the postion as unwilling participant/hero/intern!
Along with some light showers, scattered thunderstorms and severely late releases all along the east and west coast coming in from the ADV and Bandai regions...
This does provoke thought, though. I never knew we still had that bias going! I mean, women are practically the majority now.
Watch "Material Girl" by Phade if you want to see this principle put into some hilarious almost-exxagerated satire. It's "Madonna - Material Girl":
Audio: .. (guy with the) cold hard cash... is always Mr. Right!
Video: Girl.... with lots of expensive stuffs... lots...

Now, here we are, talking about all this.
But why can't we, for example, say that anime is degrading to men, too?
Perhaps it's all in the attitude. Perhaps it's because when you show women in a stereotypical, unrealistic, or just dumb way, people get upset, but not so with men.
I don't know. I for one take no offence, but am rather amused when guys are shown as dumb macho idiots, or nerdy spineless losers with limitless sex drive... hmm
Maybe we need to bring in this "separation of entertainment from reality" concept that someone mentioned before in discussing Japanese attitudes to anime, etc.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Ok, enough with the wife/kitchen jokes.
On topic question: What would you say to someone, most likely female, that dislikes anime because that person is turned off by "the negative image of women in anime" in order to have that person have a more postive attitude toward anime? (i.e. What would you tell my sister [see very first post])
P.S. It is amazing how close-minded people can be, especially in the context of liberal thought like feminism, PC, etc. OMG liberals can be close-minded?!?! :feins :
