Six pages of replies on this thread, and so far I haven't seen anyone make this point:
Anime can include racist characters without itself being racist.
Now, that doesn't cover all possible accusations of racism in anime, and in fact, I'm not sure off the top of my head that I can think of any really good examples of an anime that depicts racism without buying into it. One example might be Twelve Kingdoms - a big part of the plot is that the locals hate people from our universe, and some of the humans hate the animal-people, and so on. That's obviously meant to make viewers think about racism and its consequences among human beings in our universe; but since they've changed it to situations that don't occur in real life it's less susceptible to accusation. Maybe a better example, although it's fairly mild next to American-style black/white hatred, would be in Azumanga Daioh - the other girls assume that Kasuga must be a dumb country bumpkin and give her a mocking nickname, because she's from Osaka. That looks like racism to me; but is the show *itself* racist? That's less clear. Right from the start it's made clear that many of the girls' assumptions about people from Osaka are just not true, and to whatever extent Kasuga might be a dumb country bumpkin, that's her personally, and it's not because of where she's from.

Sorry for my grammatical errors again
Difficulty to graw big lips? Why do we even NEED to draw big lips to black people? Japanese people in anime don't look Japanese anyway, I don't know why we should draw black people with big lips and poofy hair all the time.
Huh, isn't Anthy (SKU) somekind of hindu (sp?)?
...(If I was the kind of person who always jumped on conclusions I'll call that an insult to Hinduism (SP?) but I better shut up, I haven't finished SKU, and I won't. >>; )
Huh, that guy in Real Bout High School has dark skin, neh? ...Well, I haven't watched/read that show/manga yet. ><;
Anyway, it's da DISCRIMINATION! It's seems some animes can't accept the fact that there are people with black hair out there!
And who cares, this is entertainment, the morals aren't about who's got the prettiest face, it's about something else.
The fans often discriminate more than the anime itself I believe. >>;
Anyway, dark skinned and other types of characters are quite rare, this is what makes most of them speshial.
Was this all said already? I wasn't on the mood to read everything.

Anime is racist. If you're not Japanese, you suck and are thus a target.

that's a really funny post...I mean, Yeah, I suppose there is an element of making features exagerated, but that's not rascist. Rascism is the idea that one race is supreme and all ther races are in existence to serve the supreme race. Racism arose from social darwinism. Stereotypes serve racsism very well, but stereotypes are not racism themselves.

it's not necessarily a racism, per se- it seems more that they just hold themselves higher than us lowly mortals. I suppose that since they have an education system that is far more intensive (6 days a week?!) than ours, the fact that while we were still mucking around trying to figure out the difference between a sword and a dull hunk-o-steel, they had paper, paved roads, and a serious and studious culture, I think that perhaps they feel it's right. They had a head start. The fact that we've polluted their culture (as part of the great Western Expansion) means nothing, and those people who are labeled with 'yellow fever' are looked at with contempt. You know, i know of two people here on my campus that are from two asian countries. Kenny, from Hokkaido, and Ping, from somewhere in China. neither of them are allowed to date outside their own race/nationality. Kinda... racist? yeah. Supremist? sure! But it doesn't bother me. I'm a hippie, everything just washes over me. Well, a Hippie and a Computer Tech. I really don't have much else to say, except that we all need to continue to evolve as a human race. peace out, yall, I'm done.
