NineBirds wrote:So obviously we are not understanding me when I say "wish fulfillment". I am not saying Hideki used Chii as a sex slave, I am not saying he abused her. I am saying a great part of the attraction to these types of anime is a "loser" male holding some sort of power over an attractive female--what he does with the power is irrelevant, it is the power itself that pulls in many viewers. Much anime is based on a weird gender power-structure in Japan, and many of the hardcore anime fans (otaku) in Japan are, frankly, dateless losers. Chobits-Tenchi-etc is made for these otaku--male characters they can relate to being put in positions of desirability that they would never obtain in real life. Hence the wish fulfillment. Chii is a more extreme case of this--the "loser" male being put in control of a gorgeous, sweet female who is completely willing to do whatever he wishes. The concept is the wish fulfillment, the fanservice adds to it. We're talking concept here, not actual characters. Don't worry--I'm making no assault on darling Hideki except to point out his relatively low status in the society he lives in.
Yeah, it IS wish fulfillment. Any harem anime where the nondescript but generally nice guy is surrounded and pursued by a gaggle of beautiful girls is wish fulfillment. And while this may result in a poor commentary on the state of Japanese society and the generic anime audience, the fact that it is wish fulfillment is not the sole basis on which a show should be judged. But keep in mind that THIS IS A TV SHOW. Just because people derive enjoyment from watching this type of show doesn't necessarily mean they believe that this is the way life is or that they are gung ho in favor of subjugating the female populace. Maybe that's not what you're trying to imply, NineBirds, but that's the way you're coming off.

I found nothing wrong with your argument near the beginning of this thread about Chii not having any choice about who she was going to end up with, but then you went down this wish fulfillment tack which frankly is going nowhere unless your whole point is that, because this show's premise is based around male wish fulfillment, that there can be no redeeming qualities to it.

*smacks self* Ahh, I should clarify a few points on this subject because, as paizuri noted, my posts stopped providing any sort of coherent, logical argument a while ago.

Wish fulfillment is not necessarily bad. Wish fulfillment forms the basis of all entertainment. It is not the wish fulfillment aspect of Chobits that really bothers me, but more that it is another member of a specific , prevalent pattern of harem girl wish fulfillment in anime and a symptom of some crazy gender issue in Japan. Which is an entirely different topic.

However, I can't say that I don't find it slightly disturbing that one of the more popular female anime characters is (or begins her career as) an essentially mindless naive slave. Whether she still occupies this role is debatable. Her barely-legal appearance adds to the weirdness.

And I guess that latter paragraph was really my main opinion on Chobits. I apologize for not expressing it more clearly and not getting distracted from it earlier on in the thread--it would have saved a lot of trouble. :(
Don't you hate it when people describe something as "cute" when they really mean "God, I want to fuck that"?

I find it to be a very cute (though ecchi) anime.

I don't like chobits oh chii is cute and sumomo but the plot is lame and bloated and I would take Multi over chii anyday.

She isn't a person though, she's a robot. If you got one of those little robot dog things would it have a mind of its own? OMG NO IT DOESN"T YOU MUST BE A LITTLE SLAVE OWNER CAUSE IT CAN ONLY DO WHAT YOU TELL IT TO!!!111!

Also the whole point of the series is a sort of reflection on the elements of love, what it means to love somebody among other things that I will not get into. The fact she is a robot and her place is 'below' humans develops this point. I won't say more since it would be spoilers, however if you haven't seen the whole series, you can't really comment on her role in particular.....

And I'll stop there. I'm not going to spoil. :P

I liked Chobits and think Chii is a real anime cutie.

I see Chii in the same category as Data from Star Trek Next Generation.

Chii is a sentient, self aware android with emotions and she loves Hideki. Only problem will be when they want to have kids. I guess they can always adopt.
you're also forgetting where the power switch is. He goes to... consummate the relationship... he'll turn her off. Such is the sacrifice.... oh, well, there's always the mudhole.
do persicons(sp?) have butt holes?
i mean they dont eat....
