I havent seen Grave of the Fireflies, but if I cried I think the spirit of my dead grandfather would strangle me. Actually GotF is a really tragic story (I've read raving review one after another on websites and in online papers), its just that my GF fought in WW2, was captured by the Japanese, and was tortured, saw half of his crew tortured to death etc, etc... barely survived long enough for liberation and lived the rest of his days the worlds most disgusting anti-japanese racist (he actually fantasized about killing them). I'm sure if he had seen that movie he would have laughed and rewound the worst parts to watch them again.
All of that is horrible and true. The amazing and ironic part of that story is that his intense hatred of the Japanese had the opposite effect on my dad, and now just 2 generations separated myself and my only sibling; my younger brother, LOVE Japan and find it a fascinating place. Even still, I've always had reservations about any Anime that deals with World War II, since My grandfather went through such a horrible ordeal with the Japanese, an ordeal that changed him into a monster. I know the movie villainizes an evil Aunt or something and not the U.S. firebombers, but thats just one side of that war I personally don't want to see (that being said I'll probably still see it). I'm so amazed and happy to see how Japan has grown and reacted since then, you'd think they'd hate us... but they love us!
Anyway, back on topic. You're all going to think I'm a conservative right wing nut but Saving Private Ryan made me cry at the very, very end, where the old man tears up, which was the straw that broke the camels back. Looking back on it now, I think it was the slightly religious connotation: One man unable to fathom how so much was sacrificed so that he could live, even though he did nothing to deserve it.
The only animes that made me cry were Escaflowne (towards the end, When characters just start getting killed off), and I think X-tv, although, x-tv was much less emotional than the subbed Esca was. The first Kikyo arc of IY got me pretty emotional (eps 14-27), and Ranma 1/2 made me tear up with joy.

Funny how I was going to mention this part as soon as I got off from work today. I also felt sad at this part. Mostly because I was expecting a good ending after Misato says "when you come back, we'll finish the rest." Then I felt cheated.Jonathan02us wrote:Another sad part in eva wat when misato died, she kissed shinji goodbye, she knew that she would die and not make it to see him succed. Ahh ... that was soo sad. Misato was sort of a mother figure to shinji, she really cared for shinji, so it was touching.

LOl before somebody attacks you or something hehe let me just say Gotf is only tragic because the main boy is so lazy and stupid that he kills his little sister. Naturally a country that loses and then is rebuilt by the victor will try to save some shred of dignity by making movies that they can feel sorry for themselves about. Yes war is a tragic thing but if you start you might as well be prepared to finish it. It's odd how germany lost and dosent have this same need to justify itself that japan does.

Japan has always been a very proud nation. Its my observation that this pride is rightfully justified. Japanese workers don't work for themselves as much as they work for the company. Its always been this way, its engrained into them, a cultural system that goes back at least centuries. They have always had strong national pride, and based on productivity, its easy to see why.
Japan took defeat in WWII very hard. Its still stunning to me how this country literally rose out of the ashes (literally) to become the worlds second most powerful economic superpower. Last I checked, the average standard of Living is actually higher in Japan than it is in the U.S. Just another reason I need to visit Japan sometime during my lifetime.
Well anyway, I didn't mean to offend anyone with my story. I didn't make it up, its quite true, and I've come to accept the transgressions of the past. I don't find it at all funny, although I was kind of joking when I said my grandfathers spirit might strangle me. The truth is his legacy does leave a dark cloud on my family, especially on topics related to WWII and Japan, and especially both. I realize that this all happened long before I was born, before my father was born in fact, and thus neither myself or any of my surviving relatives are in any way responsible for his actions, therefore I feel no reason to be ashamed of it.

I came pretty close to crying on that. When I get attatched to an anime character or any character at that matter, when they die or something happens to them, it's like a chunk was ripped outta my life and an empty void needs to be filled (see my Dale Earnhardt post). Nothing can replace the void in my life... Although Dale Jr. and Kevin harvick have been doing good...ryuu_hime13 wrote:AtomicWeezleman wrote:I drink like an Irishman, and run like a welshman.................Propyro wrote:atomic ... stop drinking like a brit ... it's killing your memory ... oh wait ... you are a brit ...AtomicWeezleman wrote:Hey, Propyro, you watched eva yet???

You are right it was much worse what with the rape of 2 million woman by russians and all of it cities leveled to dust far worse than any atom bomb could do. What may impress you if you go to germany all those hundreds of years old buildings you think you see are actually exact reproductions painstakingly recreated after the war.AtomicWeezleman wrote:I drink like an Irishman, and run like a welshman.................Propyro wrote:atomic ... stop drinking like a brit ... it's killing your memory ... oh wait ... you are a brit ...AtomicWeezleman wrote:Hey, Propyro, you watched eva yet???
