EK the bad news is: As a whole anime over the past year or so has been well, terrible. Of late, all I could think of that might fit your requirements are:

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (the whole under 18 thing, might cause some anger) It's more or less like the better filler episodes of the original series. It's all fun but may get annoying. (ie Sagara's weapon humour)

ROD the TV It starts out rather well. Then goes onto what I like to call the "This show is about people with unnatural powers and they hardly ever use them" Still worth having a look.

I'm kinda low on sleep, so sorry if I'm not too helpful.[/b]
x2

A strong x2.

This last year was a weird year for new animes, and it seemed to be the year of sequels (FMPf?, Onegain Twins, Ninja Scroll TV, and RODtv were just the ones I've heard about, and honestly, even the best animes this year were hardly anything I'd rearrange my top ten animes for). FMPf breaks several of BBT's rules, but what the hell, I thought it had its funny moments. RODtv starts out (1st 8 episodes or so) as a nice, warm, slow paced shoujo anime that slowly begins to build some charm... then in episode 9 a british chick gets naked (and they show everything, no cutting away) in front of poor Drake Anderson. This gratuitous nude scene goes on for what feels like forever, and its not fun nudity, its very, very awkward nudity. This scene ends by her getting graphically murdered by some vicious vines that come from one of the characters. Yeah, all capped off with a dead naked lady lying down in a pool of her own blood.

So, uh, yeah. Wtf.

The original and short ROD is not weird, is very enjoyable, has very very good animation and an even better soundtrack. Absolutely no echi elements or anything that offends your list.

ROD the TV is pretty much the same thing, until episode 9. After episode 8 ends, be prepared.

Kanon .. its a great series. First anime I cried to, if you'r into that. ---> http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... hp?t=29827

Onegai Teacher, Romance, don't fit into any of the catergories you described .. I don't think.

SaiKano (I'm not sure if thats spelled right) It's another Romance, and from what I remember it dont fit into too many of those categories either.

Grave of the Fireflies, About WWII from Japans POV, great story, don't fit into any of the categories.

The people that said Cowboy Bebop , Trigun and Berserk are right, though for Berserk I would watch out for the ending which may displease you (trust me this gives nothing away), also the first episode breaks one of your rules, but it is by no means a norm.

I would also recommend, though I haven't seen it all only the first two DVD's, so maybe it digresses and breaks your rules then, His and Her Circumstances otherwise known as Kare Kano (no not all the characters are under 18 though most of them are, and the camera angle thing is not not overdone here).

Most importantly is the fact that these are character based shows.

Oh yeah this show breaks a lot of your rules, but only does so to a minimal degree so you might want to check out Neon Genesis Evangelion (again the ending might not be suited for you), and there is a lot of the camera angst stuff, but it does not subsitute quality.

Salutes*

I hated the ending though, COME ON J.C. STAFF 2ND SERIES NOW!!!

Hmm, Kanon I'd agree with. Light comedy, and despite the kinda uber-cutesy character design, has a solid storyline to back it up.

Onegai Teacher... Well... You said "many many girls hopping on one moron". First off, he's not a nosebleeding moron/joker. He's a guy trying to live life without horrible circumstances befalling him. He's desperate [kinda like me when 2004 started, fuck...] There aren't many girls, just, two. Everyone has a solid realistic personality and it doesn't need more than 12 eps for an impact. Well, for me anyway. It's also an anime with no real "filler" I'd say. My vote there...

x2. My theory is that no matter what type of anime you like, you can't go wrong with OT. It's just flat out great on every concievable level.

Yeah well, there's some who like mindless sex and violence with poor character design and no plot whatsoever... OT is the pure opposite of that, so there's probably some people who'll hate it... :cry:

SWF...26...and still watching cartoons ?? What would your mother say ?

</sarcasm>

I have the same problem with lack of interest. About the only anime I watch these days is what I'm ripping for a video. Although I did sit through Millennium Actress twice. It was worth it.

How about Japanese live action instead? You've probably seen Lost In Translation, so I'll recommend a Luc Besson production called Wasabi. It's an offbeat action comedy with very cool characters, a typical (!) Frenchman-in-Tokyo story. And you get to see Jean Reno (The Professional, Godzilla, Ronin) playing DDR.

Also, a neat scifi called Returner was just released on DVD. Keep an eye out for all the scenes with a 747 airplane in the background. It'll make sense at the end.

Then there's Most Extreme Elimination Challenge if your cable delivers the Spike channel. My favorite dub. :P

If you must have cartoons :) then I'll second Kai's recommendation of Patlabor. Unfortunately, I don't think the OAVs are out on DVD, and they had some of the best episodes ("Snow Rondo" if you can find it).

Chance Pop Session is very good shojo without any of the cliches you listed. A down-to-earth story about young women training for the idol circuit.

And I suppose it's always worth re-watching an older Ghibli film. Porco Rosso will be out stateside in a couple of months.

Haibane Renmei, and other aBE anime(Lain, Niea_7, etc), I think are pretty interesting. They have surreal atmosphere to them. Lain has a kick ass intro.

Yeah, I thought it didn't have any filler either, until I read the manga. IMHO, this is one of those cases in which the manga is better, though the animation for O. Teacher (esp. landscape shots) is often simply beautiful, and I generally love the music of Kotoko that's used for the OSTs.
