My first anime? Well, I think I saw some dubbed animes when I was a kid, but I didn't know any of them were anime, so I don't think they count.
My first anime was, I guess, Sailor Moon, but not the (gag!) one on TV. I had just gotten this really cool internet connection in my early days in college, and was looking around for some stuff to try watching on my screen. Since I'd been a comic book and animation fan for some time, I decided to see if I could find some cartoons.
Then I ran across the early RealPlayer Sailor Moon Fansubs. My computer was an old Pentium 133 and the episodes stuttered terribly. I didn't care! I'd never seen anything like these before. (Besides, their encoding was top-of-the-line for the time!) The really fun thing was knowing from what I read on various sites about the cartoon that I was seeing stuff that had been cut out of the North American version; it was kind of the experience you'd have if you found out G.I. Joe was actually made for adults and had deleted scenes and a more punchy dialogue track.
My roommate and I had our fun laughing at some of the rather cheesy stuff in the series, but the next thing I came across was Hana Yori Dango. We'd never seen such a tastefully well-done soap opera in our lives (because we were guys and didn't think we would ever want to watch any soap operas). From then on, we watched anything we could get our hands on.
