Weird Couple

Post by HeavyMetal » Tue May 11, 2004 11:37 pm

I would have to say Ranma and Akane.

It is the typical love/hate anime relationship involving lots of slapping of the guy. Plus one really odd twist.

The first time I saw a clip of the show a video idea hit me right away.

Turns out someone already did it, and pretty well at that.

(Kept me from having to put off other series to start on buying Ranma because this is the perfect song for the show.)

Go download their video. It is done well and follows the hilarity of the show.

If you aren't familiar with the show this video sums up the relationship oddity perfectly.

Yaoi Hiei and Kurama

Post by Ryu-Inuluver » Thu May 13, 2004 8:39 pm
Kurama and Hiei from YYH. Obviously. ^_^;;

Non-cannon, a 'weird couple' look-wise, and they suit each other's personalities and function well together. Hiei's the only one who could put up with Kurama's dark side and twisted sense of humor, and Kurama's the only one who can tease Hiei and walk away unscathed. Plus they share great 'silent conversations' since they know each other better than anyone else. They make a nice fighting team, too.

It's my favorite 'non-couple' from anime. I blame the 'teargem' scene for that. ^.^
It's one of the most widely accepted 'non-couples' on the net and has been for years and years. ^__^

Alright, how many people are going to make fun of me for not knowing what a "canon pairing" is? ... :? ...

I dunno

Post by HeavyMetal » Thu May 13, 2004 11:21 pm

I don't think I ever notice anything hinting at an intimate Kurama and Hiei relationship. Maybe it was because it was the TV version. (didn't stop other shows)

I think its more of a Platonic thing.

Demons that old, powerful, and intelligent would have a hard time finding someone worth a conversation.

Besides even if it was intimate would it really be that strange?

I still say Ranma and Akane.

The Dude Looks Like A Lady video fit Ranma perfectly.

Second place maybe Ryoko and Ayeka. (This one actually has evidence in shows and manga, though often slight. There is also a sort of sister relationship as well, but typically at separate times.)

Not knowing the definition of a canon pairing is no big deal really. That’s what a dictionary is for. Webster book company likes people that don't know. Most people don't use the word canon with one n too often.

Hm, I'm still not sure, but I'm guessing that this topic is asking for strange homosexual relationships. Is that right? At least, that's what I've gathered from observation so far...except the Kaworu and Rei thing, 'cause that's heterosexual... :? *Sigh* It's confusing!

Therefore, answering what I think the question is, Vegeta and Goku would be an extremely weird and wrong couple to get together for a plethora of reasons that I'm too tired to state at the moment...so I'll just check this thread again tomorrow, so g'nite everyone!

It isn't canon - that's the reason I listed it in this thread - it is *not* a real pairing.

As for the hints, mostly it's in Kurama's voice when he teases Hiei, so yeah - the english version killed that dead. The Phillipine dubbers (years ago) even saw the threat of a Kurama/Hiei pairing to the point where they rewrote the dialogue to make a Kurama/Botan pairing - so even they saw the hints. I really doubt Hiei growls the same way in english as he does in Japanese when Kurama pokes at him. Mostly it's the teasing and the looks - again, from Kurama more than Hiei. The only real hints you get from Hiei are the movie (the little 'talk' he has after Kurama fights the Kuronue-imposter), the tournament (mm...I love that one, all those little threats when Kurama's getting pounded during his 3-in-a-row fights and Genkai's comments on the way Hiei is taking not being able to help), and the teargem scene - if you only watch one episode in Japanese, you need to watch that one. Kurama is *such* a tease. ;p

There are also the broader things - the fact that it's always Kurama who saves Hiei from burning himself out, and that Hiei never once in the entire series cries out any of his friends names when they're in trouble - except Kurama. Just the way his voice breaks on Kurama's name is hints galore. And Yusuke adds to it during the dark tournament when he keeps hinting that he knows exactly where Kurama and Hiei are (when Kurama goes out to check on Hiei's arm and they're gone all night). ^.^ Even Ogata Megumi adds to the speculation - she does an imitation of Hiei during one of her interviews (on the tournament special dvd) that I know fangirls appreciated.

Heh, but yeah. Those are just 'hints'. The main scene that makes people accept the possible pairing is the scene where Hiei and Youko Kurama laugh together. Something so simple, but it's the only time in the entire series that you see Hiei laugh like that, the same for youko Kurama. That right there establishes a very close bond of friendship/caring. Add in Kurama's flirting during the teargem scene, and it's easy to see the pairing. And it's not a coincidence that Kurama gets matched up with Shigure in the Makai tournament, the one who implanted Hiei's jagan. It's like a flashback to the other tournament, the way Hiei fidgets watching that fight. And the way he 'sneaks' away from Mukuro in order to meet Kurama on the battle field afterward is quite a bit of fun for the fangirls. ;p Not to mention that even Mukuro hints at it - the way she prods Hiei about the possibility of his having to fight his friend, then she turns and looks *directly* at Kurama with that little half smirk on her face. ^_^;; I love that scene.

Eh...okay. No, they aren't a canon couple. But there are enough 'hints' in the original version that people have been pushing the pairing since the manga first came out - half the djs were made before the series was even into the first tournament arc. Now that it's all been finished for a few years, the fandom (the fanon pairing) is widely accepted. It's not a real pairing, but it's one of the biggest 'non-couple' pairings.
