Does Anime embarass you?

[quote="D-solve"]Ok I'm 25.
You haven't made it to half my age.
Why feel embarassed? Is anime less of an art form than a live movie? Is it less intelectual or adult than the movie "Dumb and Dumber"? Is it more sugestive than many sitcoms?
My son got me into anime when he was in college. He brought home Ninga Scroll, I was impressed with it. I'm not embarassed to let people know I watch anime ( not much embarasses me at my age). If they say I watch cartoons, I correct them by saying, no, I watch anime. Now my two married daughters and their husbands are into anime, several of my relatives are too. I got to attend Anime Detour Con this spring and had a great time. Most of the people there were High school or college age, I was definately in the minority age group.
If your parents think anime is just kids stuff, show them Grave of the Fireflys, or Millenium Actress, or Princess Mononoke. There are probably a number of animes that they would like. Dads usually like high tech adventure stuff. Moms are harder to impress, my wife still thinks I'm crazy to waste my time on this. Oh well, to each his own I guess.

My school is actually very liberal for a religious school...but I'm sure my homeroom teacher wouldn't appreciate my reading Gunslinger Girl and Saiyuki and Hellsing in class. And of course, there's that time I had Negima...fanservice galore. Not something an ultra-conservative religion teacher would appreciate.
But there's a nice, solid anime following, and I've got plenty of anime friends. Our yearly literary/art magazine was just released and 2/3 of the art was manga. The funny thing is, when I first got into anime, a few acquantainces were as well, but I didn't know about it. Now that I do know, it's made me closer to them, so it's gotten be a few new friends. No one is really ashamed of it.

I have a couple titles that I'm sure my parents would enjoy, they just can't grasp the whole animated concept =/oldwrench wrote:D-solve wrote: If your parents think anime is just kids stuff, show them Grave of the Fireflys, or Millenium Actress, or Princess Mononoke. i know plenty of open minded people who drink and do drugs. and some people who drink alcohol excessively can't help it. my dad practically drank himself to death, and he was the most open minded person i've ever met, so substance abuse has nthing to do with whether your open minded or not.Nienna Elentari wrote:Wow, sorrie so long, I just think its wrong you have to be embarassed about something that isn't even bad.. in fact, people who have to drink obbsesivly(sp) and get high should be embarassed cause they think thats the only thing to do and they waste their money on a couple hours worth of entertainment (these are the types that are usually closed minded people who make fun of you for liking anime, not all, but i find most).. at least anime is there forever my apologies!

I think she was referring to those "cool" people who think they're so hot and drink for the sake of getting drunk...and so they can brag about it in school the next day. It's kind of pathetic. These are the kids who make fun of kids who still like "cartoons" and don't run around pretending to be 21 on the weekends.
I know a few kids who drink and do drugs and make perfect grades because they're freaking prodigies. School bores them, so they turn to the wrong things to occupy their time, which really bothers me. Especially since one of them is a good friend of mine....
