shaman king: like or hate

Post by njijin » Fri May 21, 2004 3:24 pm

Well the new anime that seems to be geting around is the shaman king. what I want to know is do you think it's a good anime or a anime that should had not been dubed in english.
Only time I say no is if someone asks if I've had enough.

I've watched the first few episodes on Fox, but it's too much of a poke'mon/yu-gi-oh genre for my liking. The story isn't really interesting, and the art was blah.

I don't think I would've been interested in it even if it was subbed instead.

Everyone seems to hate on the show. Personally I like it. If for no other reason than 'Rio'. Oh, and in season two theres gonna be that black jabroni. Don't see a lot of black folks in anime.

I dunno. I think it's better than a lot of shows on TV.

I personally enjoy the show. And it actually has one of the few dubs that I can marginally stand. I just wish that they didn't change a bunch of the character's names.

i actually heard that the eng dub sucked

and yea... i don't like name changes either
Manta>Mortimer

i don't think it's ANYTHING like yu-gi-oh/pokemon...

if anything, it's closer to yu-yu-hakusho, it deals a lot with spirits and moving onto the next life and of course increasing ur own spiritual strength... but what isn't about growing?

so it's good so far imo, but i've only read the manga in shonen jump so far, and it seems to be at the end of the first major arc... hopefully they won't take it too far

yugi/poke are really in the 'milk-me' catagory, yea they got wholesome themes of friendship and good>evil, but they also use that everlasting subcatagory of 'gotta-catch-'em-all' yugi with the cards and poke with the pokemon... you don't collect in shaman king... those that do are evil in fact... same with digimon... that's a reason why it was better when it started out, u only get one digimon, but the friendship you have with it is what made the series possible... they only milked it cause you can just add new characters to 'milk-it'... so it lost it's possibility as a good anime

That's the first time I've heard it put that way. Congrats, that's the best reference 'term' I've seen so far for that type of anime. ^_^ I love it.

As for Shaman King - I saw a vid for it months ago and thought it looked very very strangely animated. Now I've seen a few episodes on Fox, but I really don't like the way it's been dubbed. I haven't seen the Japanese, but you can tell when they're adding in 'corn' because American children can't handle a few extra seconds of thoughtful silence. And the dialogue itself - if it hasn't been dumbed down, then this anime must be for four year olds in Japan, even the serious parts where you can tell in Japanese the characters were concerned (it's on their faces from the way they're drawn), the dub has them joking or saying random nonsense to keep any tension from forming. I really hate that.

But yeah, it looks like something I'd check out if I didn't have to buy it to hear the original version. I just couldn't really take the dub for more than three episodes. I'm too conditioned to characters being serious when they're drawn to look that way - the inserted corn just gets to me these days. If a kid is drawn to look frightened, then he should sound frightened, not boastful and careless and somewhat ditsily happy.

I like it, but then, I've only read what manga is out and seen it subtitled. I'm morbidly curious to see it dubbed, but I want to keep a good view of the show. It actually gets dark later in the series (I don't know how far Fox has it).

The thing that scares me is the fact that, from what I've heard, when 4kids releases stuff on DVD, they usually only release the dubs....

4Kids allowed FUNimation to release the uncut subbed version of Ultimate Muscle. :?
Considering how much of a butcher job 4Kids has done (like Yu-Gi-Oh! ),the editing is not TOO bad. Heck, some of the guns and the blood is still kept. I just hope the romantic relationships doesn't get completely screwed up.
