I was told the Japanse have no plural. So, anime works as plural and singular for me. Just like otaku.

OK this thread has just solidified my stance that the English language is this dumbest language in the world and should be replaced by grunts and burps (i mean why do we need a C and a K the make the same damn sound i saw we just pick on a delete it)

OK now that I got that out of my system I would say that IMHO animes sounds better.

Or rather, ewe.

Also, madbunny, that dictionary.com definition is based on the Oxford English definition.

sheep can also be used as a generilization of the type. example i have one sheep. then if u want to specify it u could say i have one ram or w/e

My own stance is that the plural for anime is 'anime', that's all.

I don't think 'animes' is prescriptively correct, but hey... if you use it, whatever.

By the way, I always assumed that the plural for Penis was 'penii', it originating from Latin and all.

As some of you may or may not know, I'm a linguistics student. Modern (or should that be Chomskian) linguistics is basically just a bunch of hippies who sit there, listen to what people say, and then go into discussions of how it could be right, original or interesting rather than whether it's right or not. According to modern linguistics theory (which I agree with entirely), all languages, dialects and variations are objectively equal. We're much more interested in why you say something rather than how you say it.

Anyway,

What happens when you don't know the gender or age?

I think anime works best as singular and plural as well, just rearrange the words around it like with sheep and other words of that type.

That's a good sheep.
That's a good anime.

Oohhh, look at all the sheep!
Oohhh, look at all the anime!

That's the way I use it. Everyone else I meet uses it the same way.

It took this thread to realize that? I figured it out around 3rd grade upon discovering 'i before e except after c' doesn't apply all the time. Why the hell would you make a linguistic rule that doesn't always apply? It's useless if it doesn't.

In the end, I've simply resorted to memorizing the spelling of every individual word I learn, forgetting about the screwed up rules. It's not as hard as you might think.
