Where [or how] can I [watch anime affordably?]

....get/watch some good anime without spending lots of dough on buying DVDs?

Aside from watching it on tv there aren't many (legal) alternatives that we can tell you about here.

Some Blockbuster stores have good selections of anime and other rental stores. But if you want to buy it I recomend BestBuy.

There are many options available.. Television channels such as Cartoon Network show anime, and they're usually available through the purchase of cable or satellite. You could also rent the DVDs from Blockbusters, Hollywood Videos, or any other video rental store, instead of buying the DVDs themselves. You might want to try online rental stores such as Netflix, or better yet, GreenCine. There are also many places online where you can find good discounts on anime DVDs, such as The Right Stuf International. The prices can differ a lot from the ones you'd find in regular stores you go to. Keep on the lookout for good deals at the Heads Up! forum. :) Be wary of pirated DVDs, however. More information on detecting these can be found here.

You might try to find if there are any anime clubs in your area too.

Don't ask for download sites here as they are specifically against the forum rules.

Ebay. If you use Opera for web browsing, just type e anime in the address window.

Seconded. Friends and anime clubs have worked well for me in the past. (Plus the latter can help lead to the former.) :)

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with Gainesville, so I can't point you to any clubs myself.

And you can always watch a mess of spoiler-loaded amvs for the anime you're interested in. If you can only buy one or two dvds, or want to browse a variety of anime, amvs are great 'promos'. I know I'm in the minority here, but watching amvs for my favorite anime are often as 'fulfilling' as watching the anime itself - if not more so since vids tend to feature the good and bypass the filler.

I've been noticing my public library is slowly getting anime in selection. Granted it's not a huge set of choices, but it could help. And there are websites that have episodes online (either to download or 'live' watch).
