Seriously, there's no one quality I look for in an anime series or movie.

Two things: Character development and understandability. I don't mean that you have to be able to grasp every plot point the first time through--for example, FLCL is one of my favorite shows. It's not very understandable the first time, but each subsequent viewing makes the plot clearer and clearer (though I still can't tell you completely what it's about... :P )

My favorite anime is Evangelion because it has awesome, well developed characters and is kind of satirical and I think it takes on serious subjects. I just think its pretty much very important.

I also love Sailor Moon because love stories rock.

It's all in the story line for me. You have to have a well developed plot or else many people will not be in to the anime that much. If the story has no story-line, to me, it is not as good.

^^ Aye, I agree to that. The plot! I thought anime like Gasaraki and Lain was boring for awhile, but the only reason I liked to continue watching them was the plot! Nice plots these anime has!

Also, the opening songs always interest me. (I always tune into the International Channel just to watch the new Tenchi In Tokyo opening!)

So I guess the opening song and the storyline makes a favorite anime for me!

Same here. Having likeable characters is a must, of course. But if the plot sucks then the likeability of the characters doesn't matter.

Bebop for example. A good chunk of it is filler. But the thing is is that all of the filler episodes have interesting little subplots and substories (or at least in my opinion). Even though a lot of bebop is filler, it's still a favorite among many anime fans.

My favorite anime would have to be Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal for its great balance of brutality and tranquility, closly followed by Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust for its wonderful storyline, dynamic characters (except D) and amazing action scenes.
